The A3 scores highly when it comes to its drivetrain. Four petrol and two diesel units are available including

• 102bhp eight-valve 1.6-litre petrol
• 115bhp 1.6 FSi engine and 150bhp 2.0 FSI engine that use a common rail injection system that helps deliver substantial improvements in both fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions without compromising performance. In addition, the Sportback models are due to gain a new 140hp turbocharged version of the 2.0 FSI unit.
• The 3.2 V6 quattro is a performance special, with all-wheel drive, a 155mph (limited) top speed and nought to 62mph in 6.4 seconds.
• 105bhp 1.9 and 140bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel return more than 50mpg in combined driving.

There is a wide choice of transmissions, including five and six-speed manual gearboxes, a six-speed Tiptronic automatic and Audi’s advanced Dynamic Shift Gearbox, an automatic system so fast and precise, it returns better mpg than the manual transmission.
