A car like the Fiat Idea requires small capacity engines to fit into its marketing slot, hence there is a choice of 1.4i 16v petrol and a two 1.3-litre versions of Fiat's Multijet turbodiesel, tuned to deliver 70 or 90hp.

The 70hp unit moves the Idea from 0-62mph in 15.4 seconds and achieves 55.4mpg in combined cycle driving.

The more powerful engine cuts the acceleration benchmark to 12.5 seconds, with fuel consumption (combined) marginally lower at 57.7mpg.

For significantly better punch, the petrol engine develops 95hp moves from rest to 62mph in 11.5 seconds, has a top speed of 109mph and returns 42.8mpg (combined).

New for 2006 is a six-speed manual transmission on Dynamic and Eleganza models with the 1.4-litre petrol engine; elsewhere a five-speed manual is standard.

A selectable automatic transmission is available as an option on all versions.
