With an extensive range of models covering a broad spectrum of economy, performance and carrying capacity parameters, the Renault Megane Sport Hatch is an eco-car, family car, sporty car and a road-burner for the genuine enthusiast.  The petrols start with:

• The 1.4-litre 16v unit that provides a top speed of 114-115mph depending on body style, despatching 0-60mph in 12.5-13.2 seconds and returning 42.2-40.4mpg.
• The 1.6 VVT engine (which is also the entry-level for the CC model) are 119-121mph, 10.9-11.8 seconds and 41.5-40.9mpg. The speediest is the CC, while the heavier Sport Tourer drinks more fuel, but offers better aerodynamics than the hatchback.
• The 2.0-litre VVT unit is good for 124-127mph, 9.2-9.9 seconds and 35.3-34.4mpg, while a 165hp version of the 2.0 turbo in the high-performance hatches is capable of 137mph, 8.3 seconds and 36.7mpg.

Diesel is a mainstay of Renault’s business, thus there are:

• 86 and 106bhp 1.5-litre dCi. Respectively the dCi 86 and 106 units achieve maximum speeds of 106 and 115mph; 0-62mph acceleration in 14.3 and 11.1 seconds; and combined cycle fuel consumption of 62.8 and 60.1mpg.
• 130bhp 1.9-litre dCi diesel engines.   The 1.9-litre delivers 130mph, 9.0 seconds and 50.1mpg.
