Government release plans to begin satellite tracking tests in 2010.
The government have announced details for testing the controversial scheme of satellite tracking. When formerly proposed a petition was formed against it which Former Prime Minister Tony Blair replied to all members.
Written in the observer back in 2007 Mr Blair welcomes the debate but stresses: “I believe road charging is surely part of the answer here as it is in many other countries.”
The scheme plans to install a ‘black-box’ in users cars which monitors the roads users drive on. Using GPS technology via satellites, cars will be pinpointed down to individual roads. At certain times of the day the most congested roads could cost up to £1.30 per mile, however less congested routes could cost be free of charge.
Technology boffin Alan Sanderson comments, “this represents the next logical step in GPS tracking usability however I feel the infringements on citizens liberties will prevent this technology ever being embraced by the general public.”
Testing for the scheme will take place in 2010 where a selection of volunteers will adopt the system and more are encouraged.
