There are few cars in the world that can accurately symbolize an entire culture. The white 1964 Miller-Meteor Cadillac hearse was the vehicle that carried the former US president and his late Jacqueline Kennedy from the hospital where he was treated for the gun wound to the airport where his body was transported. It was on Friday November 22, 1963 that the O’Neal Funeral Home in Dallas was chosen by the Secret Service to ready the hearse as well as casket to house the Presidents body.

Sources at the Daily Mail reveal that the vehicle only switched hands once since the tragic circumstances. This certainly means that the vehicle will be worth quite a bit to whomever decides to purchase it.

Due to these circumstances it wasn’t unsurprising to see the vehicle’s price skyrocket to $900,000 (£570,000) when it first sold in 2007. Indeed, Kennedy is still considered by many to be the beloved son of all Americans. Some reporters have however noted that the price was actually lower than they had expected. The asking price was originally $1million yet it barely failed to meet that quota.

Historians have noted that the vehicle represented a loss of innocence. Indeed, Steve Lichtmann of the Professional Car society had noted that there is nothing to compare to it. Like many vehicles that have a sense of celebrity attached to them it is very difficult to value.

Being the last significant vehicle associated with the tragic period certainly gives it some worth. The Daily Mail noted that the ambulance that carried the body to the Portland Hospital in Dallas was crushed some years ago. Similarly the convertible in which the John F. Kennedy was shot in is currently housed in the Henry Ford museum in Detroit and does not look like it will be switching hands anytime soon.
