Asking The Experts

Survey Asking The Experts

“If you really want to know about cars, ask the experts.”

So says Which? Car editor Richard Headland. But who are these experts? Manufacturers? (Bit biased.) Dealers? (Bit too profit making.) Garage owners? Mechanics?

None of the above. According to Richard, the experts are “… the people who drive every day.”

With (allegedly) no brand loyalty – although that is a touch difficult to swallow – it’s the everyday driver who can tell you what is good, and bad, about the cars that they drive.  Personally cars are like salad cream – it has to be Heinz – but in these economically frugal days, to paraphrase Joseph with his dreamcoat “Any car will do.”

So what did Which? Car find out in a Summer 2011 survey for new and used cars?

Makers of the most reliable cars

hyundai logo1 300x213 Asking The ExpertsHyundai; according to the survey, has a great range of cars, is value for money, reliable and offer transferable, five-year warranties at a time when everybody is looking to cut back and make their money go further. In fact, a Hyundai has, on average, a 20% chance of a fault in 12 months from new. That’s not the best – but more about that later.

Car that makes its owners happy

In first place, a car that was actually phased out 6 years ago, but still holds a place in its owners’ hearts – the Toyota Yaris Verso.

Second, the VW Passat CC

Third, Land Rover Discovery – but, as you’ll see later, that was the only good news for the Land Rover in this survey.

Most Loved cars

skoda logo new 150x150 Asking The ExpertsIn the Top 10 of this list, there’s 4 Skodas – the Yeti, (Never seen one of them, although the apparantly exist icon smile Asking The Experts ), Superb Estate, old Superb and new Superb.

But down there at the bottom…

Most ‘un-loved’ cars

Strictly not a true title but I didn’t really want to put ‘Most loved cars – well, not really’ as a title so, at the bottom of the most loved cars, with a satisfaction percentage of 49.4% (No; I’ve no idea how they were calculated but I’m guessing at a “How much do you love this car?” question) is the Renault Laguna Sport Tourer.

It’s in good company, as 7 out of the bottom 10 are built by French manufacturers (did they ask Al Murray to put this survey together?) with poor handling, performance, build quality and poor non-engine electrics cited as reasons for this particular poor performance.

So, it seems that Which? Car readers and members seem to like practical good-value cars (like Skoda, so it seems), aren’t keen on the “unreliable and fault-prone” Gallic cars like Renault and Peugeot and really can’t be bothered with the ‘satisfaction factor’ of so-called luxury brands like Mercedes, BMW and VW – giving them an average score, the same as Alfa Romeo and Citreon.

Says a lot more about them than any other statistic.

—————————————————————

toyota avensis 150x150 Asking The ExpertsThe survey looked at over 67,000 cars – new and used – to get the results, and other ‘winners’ included:

Best Buy (Medium Sector aka ‘most popular car bought’ sector) – Kia Cee’d estate
Best value cars based on dependability and running costs (Medium Sector) – Honda Jazz and Skoda Fabia diesel
Best Medium Cars (Used) – Mazda 3, VW Golf, VW Jetta, Ford Focus
Best MPV (Used) – Honda FRV, Skoda Roomster, Toyota Previa

But the biggest winner of all, an undisputed winner in the Large Section (Used) – and every other Large Section sector – was the Toyota Avensis. Often called “dull” in description by the questioned drivers, the petrol version scored way ahead of many of its rivals in the majority of cases.

———————————————————

Korean cars 300x175 Asking The ExpertsAnd, if you want further proof of reliability. What Car? in conjunction with Warranty Direct released a report suggesting that, for reliability, Japanese and Korean makes are the best.

Honda vehicles, for the 6th year in a row, are top of the pile (That’s the power of dreams, eh?) with a mere 9% chance of developing a fault from new in the first 12 months. Toyota, Suzuki, Lexus and Mitsubishi fill the next four places.

And down at the bottom? Close your ears Land Rover – it’s you – with a 55% chance of a fault. And you won’t have to travel too far to have a chat with your fellow relegation favourites because they are all European. Alfa Romeo, Renault and Saab are all in the mid forties when it comes to chance of a developing fault from new.

Sorry Europe! Time to get those metaphorical socks pulled up!

Mitsubishi Launch Online I-MiEV Personalisation Programme

64671mit i MiEV customiser Mitsubishi Launch Online I MiEV Personalisation Programme

Now, I take three exceptions to the title of Mitsubishi’s latest press release. Before I detail them, allow for me to present it to you in its unedited form:
MITSUBISHI MOTORS IN THE UK LAUNCHES ‘FUNKY’ i-MiEV ON-LINE PERSONALISATION PROGRAMME

Now, you can probably see the problem already. But please, let me explain:

1. It’s all capitalised. Granted, this seems to be common practice when it comes to press releases, so it seems unfair to single out Mitsubishi. However, in this case, for some reason the capitalisation seems particularly obnoxious.

2. “On-line”. It’s “online”, Mitsubishi. The English language has long-since caught up with our age of information. This isn’t 1992 – they might as well have described it as the “interweb”.

3. “Funky” – seriously? That even the author of this abomination has chosen to place this offensive term in the old inverted commas to me suggests that they’re perfectly aware of just how embarrassing a term that is to use in 2011.

But enough of that. I’m starting to sound like Ignatius C. Reilly – so let’s get on with it and talk about this “funky” programme, then.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is the very first mass produced pure electric vehicle (EV) to be made available to the UK market. It’s also the first vehicle from Mitsubishi’s fleet to be available in their new UK web area which allows for consumers to customise bespoke vehicles from their own home.

Yes, it will be possible for buyers of the i-MiEV to choose from a full range of accessories to help each car to fit the personality of its owner. Everything from roof and wing mirror graphics to enhanced audio/MP3 options – right down to leather interiors and even environmentally friendly accessories – Mitsubishi seem to have taken a leaf from Burger King’s book – have it your way, kids.

Featured in the programme will be many products which have never before been offered by Mitsubishi. These include partial vehicle body raps, custom leather and – get this – Alston trimmed interiors – that’s an innovative new “techno-Suede” – and any car interior which sounds like a Brett Anderson experimental electronic side-project is alright with me.

There will also be further development to such standard products as reflect the i-MiEV’s green credentials. How would you like plant resin car mats? Yeah? Thought so.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV and all its accompanying accessories can be purchased from one of Mitsubishi’s 13 UK EV Sales Centres. The bespoke web area can be found by visiting Mitsubishi’s national website.

Have fun, go nuts.

And it does sound like fun. I feel bad for being so mean about their press release, now.

But “funky” – you understand, right?

Mitsubishi’s Contender

Mitsubishi i Concept 2 Mitsubishi’s Contender

The electric car market has been in recent months quite, well, electric. The American contender Chevrolet has released its Volt while the ever-popular Japanese Nissan Leaf has been catching quite a few headlines. It seems that now it is Mitsubishi’s turn with the ‘i’ model taking the stage, and it seems, at least initially, that it will fair very well against its strong competitors.

The central feature that makes the Mitsubishi such a great pick for the electric vehicle market is not simply that it offers a lower cost than its contenders, rather that it provides the best mile-per gallon makeup with a whopping 126 miles for the city and an amazing 99 for the highway. This compares admirably with the Volts 95 in the city and 90 on the highways, or even the leafs 106 in the city and 92 on the highway.

The ‘I’ model is also smaller than the other two manufactures, giving it both an advantage and disadvantage in the subcompact market. Furthermore, a rather great negative with the vehicle is that on a single charge its range was a mere 62 miles. With the leaf beating it and the Volt’s gas motor providing an extra needed push, it doesn’t look good for the little ‘I.’ Having said this, this smaller range does come with the advantage of keeping the weight down, allowing for greater efficiency but also quite a bit more maneuverability.

While the estimation of the new vehicle are currently at around £18,000, it does provide you to drive off with a rather great vehicle for the cost, sometime in the year 2012. But with the electric market slowly opening its doors to greater diversity, perhaps consider wisely other alternatives as purchasing a vehicle can be one of the greatest investments one can make, especially in this economy. Not perfect, but certainly a great step up, one can’t wait to see what else Mitsubishi has hidden away.

Japan Going Even Greener

Chief Engineer Hiroshi Kayukawa and the Prius Alpha 1024x682 Japan Going Even Greener

When one thinks about the Japanese car market, small, cute, and energy efficient cars come to mind. Indeed it is the home of many green manufactures, like Toyota and Mitsubishi, that are spearheading a major movement towards these type of vehicles. However, in recent weeks, the market has been more heated than ever with the release of new models that are better than ever.

Toyota has broken the glass roof with the introduction of the Prius Alpha only a month ago. Conservatively projecting sale of 3,000, yet it managed to shatter records with a whopping 52,000 orders. Known for many number of great innovations, Toyota had an awful time recovering and rebuilding its factories and warehouse after the devastating earthquake several months ago. A solid performance with the sector puts it once more on the path it was forced from.

The launch of this new vehicle has led other manufactures to produce competitive vehicles that hope to challenge the Prius. One such vehicle, constructed by Mitsubishi, is the I-MiEV which, while not new per say, has had the price dropped by the British equivalent of £8,000. However, there is a slight catch: the cheaper model will be loaded with a smaller battery. This has the disadvantage of placing limits of speed as well as distance on the small electric vehicle. A provisional estimation would put it at a drop as large as 40 km from its original position. Similar to Toyota, Mitsubishi was also hit hard by the earthquake and with decisive steps taken the company too is on the right track to recovery.

Japan is one of the few nations in the world that has taken action in the automobile market to curb pollution. With such popularity and promise shown with increased sales, a it appears that while the economy and infrastructure may still be getting rebuilt, the pace and popularity of the revitalized green movement will have great results.
