Vauxhall have released the first ever official pictures of their new Astra Sports Tourer.
The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer will be the second model to join the new Astra range which stands as the best-selling range in Britain for the first half of 2010.
The new Astra Sports Tourer model will boast extensive storage space with a maximum load capacity of 1550 litres with an additional 25 litres of space in the cabin. It will feature the option of Intelligent Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL), which has eight different bi-xenon settings and automatically adapts the headlights according to weather and road conditions.
Buyers will have the choice of six different engines. Though stressing that all figures quoted are provisional, Vauxhall have revealed that the petrol line-up will include the 100PS 1.4i ECOTEC-4 with variable valve timing and sequential fuel injection whilst a new ecoFLEX model will become available soon after launch and will feature the innovative Start/Stop technology. This feature prevents the engine from running when the car is in a stationary position which helps to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. The Astra Sports Tourer will be one of the first Vauxhall models to incorporate this feature.
In an obvious boon to UK manufacturing, the Astra Sports Tourer will be assembled solely at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire, while its new upper-body structure has been 100 per cent engineered at Vauxhall Engineering Centre in Bedfordshire.
The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer will receive its debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show in September and is expected to make it to UK showrooms by the end of the year.

UK automotive history will be made next week (June 22) when Vauxhall will undertake in the longest ever UK road-trip to have ever been made in an electric vehicle.
The Vauxhall Ampera E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle), though not due to go on sale in the UK until 2012, will next week undergo what is effectively its “real world” debut. That is, it will be driven for the first time on public roads as opposed to test-tracks. The “road trip” seems to be a move on the part of Vauxhall to quell all notions of “range anxiety”. Many people seem to fear that electric cars might suffer from shorter ranges than their gasoline counterparts. However, the Vauxhall Ampera E-REV will boast a real world range of 350 miles. With the vehicle set to travel only half of its capable range next week (170 miles), perhaps the intention is to nip all reservations in the bud well in advance of the car’s official release.
The trip will begin at Vauxhall’s Luton home and will end at their passenger car plant in Ellesmere Port. The journey will be made relay-style, with Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s MD, covering the first leg. “It’s quite poignant that Luton, our home for the last 105 years, should mark the starting point of not just this historic journey, but also the future of E-REV vehicles in the UK,” said Aldred. “In the last century, Vauxhall has pioneered innovation and technology for mainstream car buyers, and this commitment will continue with the Ampera. We’re truly energising the future for British motorists.”
The first forty miles of the journey will be powered by electricity stored in a cutting-edge, 16kWh lithium-ion battery resulting in zero tailpipe emissions. Once this battery’s energy has reached a minimal level, a small petrol/E85-fuelled engine generator will take over and seamlessly provide electricity to power the electric drive unit. This boosts the vehicles range by a further 310 miles.
The Vauxhall Ampera E-REV will be departing from Luton at 09:50 and is expected to arrive at Ellesmere Port by 15:00. En route it will be stopping at Vauxhall’s Brand Centre at Star City, Birmingham.

The British International Motor Show was the venue for the world premiere of the brand new Vauxhall Insignia.
All the new models were there on the large Vauxhall stand with a large dedication to this ground breaking model. Its modern coupe styling is designed to rejuvenate the market after it has become stagnant with re-releases of older models. This fresh new design represents a new way of thinking for Vauxhall asserting their position in the super competitive mid-size market.
Design.
The super sleek aerodynamic design has a drag efficient of just 0.27 which means very little until you compare it to all the other cars in its class which it beats hands down. Vauxhall have spent over 650 hours in the wind tunnel with this car sculpting the perfect shapes to help it glide through the air. The future ecoFlex version designed to reduce CO2 goes even further. The shape does not just offer stream lined aerodynamics but also enhances performance through features such as the front bumper corners, rear spoiler and exterior mirror wing forms. Bringing the sexy coupe style to a mid size saloon car is a bold feat of engineering, successfully creating the space for five spacious seats and a large boots whilst retaining the coupe style.
Powertrain.
The Insignia comes with five fantastic engines offering great versatility across the range. They have three petrol engines and two new 2.0 litre turbo diesel engines, the petrol engines ranging from 140 – 260 hp and diesels from 130 – 160 hp. All are designed to be efficient and eco-friendly whilst still producing enough power to stand out against other cars of its size.
Chassis.
Using MacPherson strut front suspension and four-link rear layout the suspension is designed perfectly for this vehicle. The steering and suspension are attached to a sub frame which reduces noise and vibrations to the drivers cab. Using FlexRided system the driver can control the suspension to their personal driving style. A choice of Standard, Tour and Sport are available all controlled by the Driving Mode Control which overseas and executes the actions and reacts to changes in driving style and emergency situations.
Adaptive 4×4.
Future models will have the availability of adaptive 4×4 system designed to optimise driving stability and handling. The Transfer Torque Device distributes power to different wheels depending on driving conditions and demands.
Innovation.
The Insignia features some of the most useful new technology on display at the motor show. Vauxhall have refined their already impressive adaptive front lighting to help keep your way lit at all time. They have also added a front camera system which tracks the road ahead at 30 frames a second filtering the important information for the drivers assistance. It will keep an eye on road lanes for you and display a warning if you veer out of line and will spot road signs such as ‘speed limits’ and ‘no passing signs’ to keep you informed of current information. The new seats are also extremely comfortable and make driving easier hence their award from an independent German ergonomics group.
The Vauxhall Insignia was one of the main highlights of the motor show this year paving the way for reasonably priced, stylish mid-sized cars. Its aerodynamic, coupe style and bold intersecting lines raise the bar for everyday affordable vehicles. The hype was justified and deserving of the effort Vauxhall have put into its development.

This July Vauxhall are set to showcase the new Insignia which comes in two models, the hatchback and saloon.
This new car has been designed to retain the beauty of its other mid range models which have had so much success over the years. The new muscular designs signifies a strong change in Vauxhall’s presence on the automotive market.
They have released a hatchback and saloon model as 5-door cars traditionally command a high percentage of the UK mid-sized class market. Vauxhall spent over 650 hours in the wind tunnel with this new model and have seriously improved the efficiency and dynamics of this size car. It now has drag coefficient of just 0.27, which might mean nothing to most but its the best in its class and thats all you need to know.
The choice of five engines, three petrol and two diesel, offer a wide variety where all of which pass the Euro 5 emissions standards.
This model is is due to be unveiled at the British International Motor Show in London from July 23 – August 3.
