JEREMY SCOTT ENTERS RED BULL TERRITORY WITH SMART FORJEREMY.

At this years LA Auto Show, smart will be unveiling to the general public a Jeremy Scott-created version of their electric wonder – complete with wings.

Wings are the familiar trademark of the American start designer, and he has added them to this unique version of the car with the wings lighting up like rockets, The smart forjeremy show car will be launched next year as a limited special edition and was showcased pre-auto Show at Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles, with music provided by the artist M.I.A.

Dr. Annette Winkler & Jeremy Scott

“We were totally enthusiastic about the first sketches that Jeremy presented to us”, said Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart, during the world premiere. “Both smart and the wings represent a bit of freedom on the crowded streets of major cities. In their respective disciplines, both the fashion designer Jeremy Scott and the smart brand are pioneering trendsetters, venturing into uncharted territories and challenging the status quo.”

It’s the first time ever, so it is claimed, that a car brand has allowed a fashion designer to make changes to an actual vehicle body, as Head of Mercedes-Benz and smart design Gorden Wagener explains: “Co-operations with fashion designers are normally limited to selecting interior materials and interior and exterior colour schemes. With Jeremy Scott, however, we wanted to go one step further and integrated the typical wings as a central design element in the vehicle body. This was quite a challenge, because it was not just a case of creating a show car, but rather of creating a near-series study with the potential for licensing it for road use in the future.”

Jeremy Scott has created eye-catching outfits for the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry and Rihanna, with wings being one of the recurring design elements that he features time and time again on clothing such as sweatshirts, sunglasses and sneakers. As Jeremy Scott explains: “For me, wings mean freedom, a sense of weightlessness. Because of this, I definitely wanted to have them for the smart electric drive in order to convey the way it frees the environment of noxious emissions and symbolises the new lightness of mobility.”

Working with the “smart Design Division” at the Mercedes-Benz Cars Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California, 8 months later, the smart forjeremy was born; “an avant-garde and futuristic smart with loving details based on the overriding wing theme.” The smart forjeremy is bright white with chrome touches, and a wing on either side made of transparent fibreglass and decorated with rocket-shaped elements that light up red, serving as rear and brake lights. “Transparency was a very important factor for me, since it represents lightness and space,” explains the designer.

On top of all this, the rear tyres are wider along with the rear wheel arches, and the wheel rims are shaped like aeroplane propellers, with elegantly curved “eyebrows” above its front headlight.

And the ‘futuristic’ look doesn’t end there. Inside fine white nappa leather with minimalist seams are enhanced with chrome surfaces throughout, with even the steering wheel being white.

“We will also launch a limited special edition of the smart forjeremy in 2013″, Dr. Winkler said. “And I really look forward to cruising the city in this item of haute couture.”

We will keep an eye out for her.
