Goodwood Festival Driver Line-Up Goes Stellar
It’s around one month until the Goodwood Festival of Speed which celebrates its 20th anniversary from 12th – 14th July, and the list of top motor sport names that will be appearing is getting longer and more ‘superstarry’ (If that isn’t a word, it should be.)
Let’s start with the current season’s Formula 1 teams and drivers that will be making an appearance.
In fact; It would be just as easy to look at the starting grid for almost any Grand Prix. Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus, Mercedes, Marussia and Caterham have all confirmed along with many of their leading drivers and other characters involved in the F1 season – and that includes previous World Champions, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, as well as Nico Rosberg, Roman Grosjean, Max Chilton, Jules Bianchi, Sebastian Buemi, Marc Gene, Heikki Kovalainen and Adrian Newey.
Then there’s the list of Past Grand Prix masters.
You’ll never get tired of looking back at the past to the days when ‘racing was racing’ (as the old-timers tell us) so there’s a chance to relive those days with such stars as Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Nick Heidfeld, Jochen Mass, Emerson Fittipaldi and Rene Arnoux. It’s like reading a copy of Who’s Who of Motor Racing with 17 Grand Prix winners in action on the day (with a total of 232 GP wins between them!)
In fact, at this year’s event, Nick Heidfeld will be reliving one of the great Festival of Speed’s moments when he will be reunited with the McLaren MP4/13 that he used to set the fastest Goodwood Hill time back in 1999 – a time that still stands today of 41.6 seconds.
Does rallying get a look in?
You bet your racing socks it does! IRC Champion, Andreas Mikkelsen will be spitting gravel in the 2013 VW Polo WRC along with Spanish double World Champion Carlos Sainz, along with appearances from other rallying greats such as Mikko Hirvonen (who will be flying around the Goodwood Firest Rally Stage in his Citroen DS3 WRC), Juha Kankkunen, Björn Waldegård, Rauno Aaltonen, Jimmy McRae, Hannu Mikkola and Russell Brookes.
Of course; there are many other star drivers and riders along with cars and motorcycles from pretty much every major motor sport disciplines in the world, past and present, including champions from Formula 1, Indycar, the World Rally Championship, Superbikes, NASCAR, World Sports Cars and Touring Cars, plus Land Speed Record holders.
Throughout the Goodwood Festival of Speed, all of the drivers taking part will appear on the walkway leading into the exclusive BlackRock Drivers Club; which will give Festival goers and fans the rare opportunity to see their heroes right up close, and maybe even have a word or two with them!
Many of them won’t just be walking the walk and talking the talk as Goodwood is taking the opportunity of the 20th Birthday celebrations to recapture many of the outstanding Festival of Speed moments from the two fantastic decades that they have had, featuring over 350 great machines from around the world, including New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Japan and the USA. Many of the man and machine pairings that made them famous will be reunited, including three-time Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet returning to the cockpit of his celebrated Brabham BT52, in which he secured the 1983 crown.
And don’t forget the world-famous 1.16 mile Goodwood hillclimb!
Tickets are selling fast (especially in the grandstand) so get yourself over to the Goodwood website (www.goodwood.com/motor sport/) and check out the ticket section or ring the ticket line on +44 (0)1243 755055 for your chance to be at a party that will not only feature a celebration of motor sport history and car culture but also a host of other memorable and often outrageous, vehicles and competitors new to Goodwood.
