Mercedes-Benz, in association with Smart, are set to produce 10,000 electric vehicles and some more environmentally friendly engines.
Mercedes-Benz are planning to produce a staggering 10,000 electrically powered vehicles by the end of 2012.
Thomas Weber, the director for research and development, commented that the plans will involve the use of fuel cell stacks and will be pushed through relatively soon. Mercedes-Benz plan to use a lithium ion battery in the Mercedes A-Class range and in the Smart Car models.
These vehicles could be seen as soon as 2009 in order for them to receive extensive testing in real-life environments. Limited production could begin by 2010 going into full production by 2012.
Mercedes-Benz is already pioneering the development of environment friendly cars and it plans to introduce the diesel model of the smart fortwo to British drivers in February.
Consuming only 85.6mpg, the new smart can travel the equivalent distance of Dover to Prague on just a single tank of fuel while releasing only 88g of CO2 per kilometre.
These 10,000 electric vehicles will significantly reduce the Mercedes’ fleet average carbon emissions and may help take it under the EU directed 120 g/km.
