Volkswagen Tiguan Review 2021

First introduced back in 2007, the Volkswagen Tiguan continues to be a great competitor in the mid-sized SUV class.

Spacious, comfortable and good-to-drive, this popular family car competes with the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mazda CX-5 and the Ford Kuga

Volkswagen Tiguan review covers:

Volkswagen Tiguan Key Features

  • Dynamic design with sharply sculpted lines and clean shapes
  • Generous interior space with 40:20:40 split rear seats
  • 520-litre boot, which expands to 1,655 litres with rear seats down
  • Available in petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid form
  • Four models available, including Life, Active, Elegance and R Line

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

Recently refreshed in 2020, the Tiguan's design is elegant and dynamic throughout. Its clean shapes, sharply sculpted lines, and large grille feed into VW's redesigned LED headlights and updated taillights.

Volkswagen Tiguan exterior

Inside, the Tiguan is just as impressive, with plenty of room in the front and back seats and lots of technology offered as standard, including an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and automatic lights.

At the rear, the Tiguan's boot can hold up to 520 litres, increasing to 615 litres when you slide the rear seats forward, making for more than enough room for the weekly family shop. The 40:20:40 split rear seats also fold down flat to increase the load capacity to 1,655 litres for extra space when required.

Interior and Trims

Inside, the Tiguan's cabin may not be as exciting or luxurious as the BMW X3 or Audi Q5 but is intuitively laid out and well built. High-spec models add plush seats and additional technology.

Four models are available, including the Life, Active, Elegance and R Line. The entry-level Life trim includes a sat-nav system, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control system, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Active trim adds keyless entry, heated power-folding exterior mirrors, electric tailgate and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Elegance trim consists of LED Matrix headlights, adaptive and predictive cruise control, heated front seats and steering wheel, a 10.25-inch digital driver's display and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The top-spec R Line comes with sporty bumpers, lowered suspension, sporty pedals, a 12.3-inch Active Info display, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, auto lights and wipers, a large panoramic sunroof and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Power and Performance

The Tiguan is available in petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid form. The cheapest option is the 1.5 TSi EVO with manual transmission, which is smooth to drive and reasonably economical. If performance is at the top of your list, the 2.0 TSI 4Motion R with semi-automatic transmission is worth a look, while the 1.4 TSI eHybrid Life DSG with semi-automatic transmission is best in terms of efficiency and economy.

Volkswagen Tiguan interior

Out on the road, the Tiguan offers a comfortable ride thanks to its adaptive dampers, which soaks up bumps with a soft-edged plushness and improves the overall ride quality. The Tiguan is also a decent motorway cruiser, with its steering assistance and adaptive cruise control keeping the car in lane and accelerating and braking as required.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Volkswagen Tiguan start from £29,860.00 OTR* or to lease from £250.12 per month.

Only negative I have is the controls for heating etc, have to take your eyes off the road to make adjustments and even then you could go to a setting you don't want.

The vehicle meets my requirements, the only thing that I would comment on is the slightly lower fuel consumption than expected and I would have liked a couple of additional features. Overall an excellent car.

George Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line DSG Model Year 23

The driving technology sometimes reacts to conditions that are not there ie driving on a road with 70mph speed limit sees the signpost for 40mph on a slip road and automatically applies the brakes, not ideal.

The vehicle is practical, spacious and feels secure on today's busy roads. Consider offering options that may not have been considered when the lease was first applied for I.e. towing hitch or maintenance suport pack etc.
