In a world chockablock with SUVs of all shapes and sizes, Citroen have decided that more is more, and have revealed plans for an all-new C5 Aircross SUV to launch initially in China this year, followed by Europe next year.
The new C5 Aircross represents a significant step in the development of Citroën's Advanced Comfort® programme as the new SUV is the first vehicle to be equipped with a new suspension system with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions™, making the ride even more comfortable than you would expect with a Citroën.
"The New C5 Aircross is the symbol of a brand with strong momentum, in touch with the expectations of customers in regions all over the world. It is the first practical illustration of our offensive on the SUV market, illustrating our ability to approach it in our own way, with greater emphasis on character, comfort and on-board well-being. New C5 Aircross will clearly be a major growth driver for Citroën." Linda Jackson, Citroën CEO
The Aircross concept was originally presented back in 2015 at the Shanghai Motor Show, and was the subject of high praise, thanks to its colourful personality, unique stance and bright interior - values that have now been translated into a full production model that Citroen hope will "place the New C5 Aircross right at the heart of the SUV C-segment."
The new C5 Aircross is both confident and dynamic to look at, its floating roof, black windscreen pillars and rear quarter-lights giving it a strong, contemporary, stylish identity.
On initial view, the new Aircross brings to mind the Nissan Juke, but on further inspection you can see the Citroen identity is expressed by the wide, imposing front end with the Citroen chevrons clearly evident on the grille.
The bonnet is long and tall, and protective panels on the lower body and wheel arches are enhanced with the graphic contours of the coloured Airbump® inserts, bringing a modern look to the car's character.
Colour is prominent in the personalisation of the C5 Aircross with Pearl White, Perla Nera Black, Platinium Grey and the likely favourite Volcano Orange, all available, with the option of two metallic touches to bring yet more personality and elegance to the car.
And the new C5 Aircross will be available with a choice of 17" 18" or 19" wheels, the two largest being diamond-cut alloys for an executive finish with real visual impact.
We are speaking comfort right from the off, as soon as you open the doors, with the C5 Aircross welcoming you inside with a style totally in keeping with the exterior.
A high driving position allows the driver to assume control from the off as they survey the tailored dashboard with its tall and wide centre console, 12.3" digital display cluster, and 8" HD touchscreen.
With plenty of storage available, the new car takes the sofa-inspired seating of the C4 Cactus, but approaches it in a new way, in keeping with the world of the SUV, and using attractive materials that are soft to the touch and generously padded for both driver and passenger comfort.
The cabin is bathed in light, thanks to the generous panoramic sunroof and glass right around the car, allowing a great view from the outside of the wide choice of materials available, from 3D woven mesh to Nappa leather.
"The opulent, generous interior of New C5 Aircross was designed for a simple, relaxed driving experience, reassuring occupants through its rational layout, intelligent design and quality of build."
In fact, down to the perfect alliance between comfort and technology dictated by the aforementioned Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme, the new C5 Aircross could well be the most comfortable SUV of its time.
The cabin's materials combine with Citroën's new suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions™ to ensure that the drive itself is up to the standards already experienced by drivers of non-SUV Citroen cars.
It's all down to the new suspension. Whereas a conventional suspension system is made up of dampers, springs and mechanical bump-stops, the new Citroën system adds two hydraulic stops to each suspension unit – one for rebound and one for compression. In this way the suspension functions in two steps, depending on input, helping to control vertical movement and creating a 'magic carpet' effect, as if the car were flying over bumps and dips in the road.
This affects all car occupants for the better, with passengers now experiencing wide, thick seats with welcoming backrests, offering an armchair-like journey.
Front seats are available with an advanced multi-point massage system using eight pneumatic chambers in the backrest as well as a heating option.
Better acoustics, an Air Quality System (AQS) in the cabin, more storage compartments, greater legroom and a hands-free and electrically operated tailgate, all connect to make sure that a trip in a new C5 Aircross is a joy.
No surprises that the new C5 Aircross is packed full of the latest technology available for all occupants to keep them safe AND connected to the busy world outside. Features include:
The new C5 Aircross features the latest-generation petrol engines developing 165 and 200hp, along with the EAT6 e-shift automatic gearbox, and will also be the first Citroën vehicle to feature the Plug-In Hybrid PHEV e-AWD drivetrain. This makes the New C5 Aircross the most powerful Citroën production car ever, featuring four modes of operation: All-electric (with a range of 60km), Hybrid for long distances without charging, Combined and 4X4.
