Car leasing continues to grow in popularity across the UK, with more than 1.5 million drivers now leasing vehicles - a rise of 12.5% compared to last year.
However, many motorists may not realise that failing to properly clean and maintain their vehicle throughout the lease could result in unexpected charges when the car is returned.
Experts recommend thoroughly cleaning your car every two to four weeks to help protect the paintwork and spot damage early. Despite this, research shows that 60% of UK drivers admit they are often embarrassed by how dirty their car is.
Nationwide Vehicle Contracts highlights why regular cleaning matters and shares simple ways drivers can help avoid unnecessary end of lease charges.
Many drivers underestimate how important cleanliness is during an end-of-lease inspection.
Dirt and grime can hide scratches, dents, stains, and interior damage that may only become visible once the vehicle is professionally inspected at hand back.
“The Fair Wear and Tear standard is the industry guideline used during end-of-lease inspections to determine what counts as acceptable ageing and what is considered chargeable damage.
When a car is dirty, it’s much harder to spot issues with the paintwork or interior. Keeping the vehicle clean gives drivers the chance to identify and fix smaller problems before they become costly charges”

1. Wash the exterior regularly
Giving the outside of your car a proper wash helps scratches, scuffs, and paint damage stand out more clearly.
Drivers should also pay close attention to the windscreen, where hidden scratches may become more noticeable once cleaned.
Scratches to body panels can cost up to £150 if left unresolved before hand back.
2. Clean seats and floor mats
Vacuuming and freshening up seats and mats can help spot stains or wear before inspection.
Interior stains and damage can result in charges of up to £40 if they fall outside fair wear and tear guidelines.
3. Don’t forget hidden areas
Storage compartments, door pockets, and underneath seats are common areas where rubbish, spills, and odours build up over time.
These areas are often checked during inspections and could be flagged if left excessively dirty.
4. Wipe down high-contact areas
Cleaning touchpoints such as the steering wheel, centre console, and door handles can help reveal small scuffs or marks that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Keeping these areas clean also helps maintain the vehicle’s overall condition.
5. Keep on top of interior dust and rubbish
The RAC recommends using a small paintbrush to remove dust from air vents and keeping a small bin inside the car to reduce clutter.
Simple habits like these can help keep the interior in good condition throughout the lease.
To help avoid unexpected costs, drivers should prepare their vehicle carefully before returning it.
Before hand back, remember to:
- Thoroughly clean the car inside and out
- Check for scratches, scuffs, or stains
- Fix smaller issues early where possible
- Photograph the vehicle in daylight as a condition record
Taking the time to inspect your vehicle properly before hand back can help reduce the risk of avoidable charges.
“A proper clean gives drivers a much clearer view of their vehicle’s condition and can help prevent surprises during inspection.
Small issues are often far cheaper to resolve before the vehicle is returned.”
