Smart have two new models arriving here in the UK early next year: the new smart fortwo and smart forfour – both of them more economical, agile, stylish and spacious than ever before; and now packed with extras including direct steer electric power steering, an automatic start/stop function and LED daytime running lights.
The fortwo will be available in two power output guises (71 hp and 90 hp turbo) along with, for the very first time, a new five-speed manual gearbox (with an optional six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission available.)
With the 71 hp engine the fortwo can manage fuel economy of 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle, a top speed of 94mph and CO2 emissions of 97 g/km; while the 90 hp turbo variant returns comparable figures of 67.3 mpg, 96mph and 97 g/km.
One of the best things about a smart car is its dimensions, and at just 2.69 metres long, we are talking some major agility for the fortwo, with a new tiny turning circle benchmark at 6.95m kerb-to-kerb - better than a London cab and so perfect for inner-city manoeuvring.
Oh: and it’s also got the most interior space in relation to the size of any car in the segment so driver and passenger can ‘stretch out’ in a fashion.
Right from launch the forfour will feature only the 71 hp engine twinned as standard with the manual gearbox, achieving up to 67.3 mpg on the combined cycle, 97 g/km of CO2 emissions, a top speed of 94 mph and a turning circle of just 8.65 metres kerb-to-kerb. To make access easy, the rear doors open at an 85 degree angle, while the rear seats and front passenger seat fold flat making the forfour practical for passengers and large loads alike. A 90 hp version, and the optional automatic gearbox, will follow later in the year.
Models full of passion, prime and proxy
When it comes to both the smart fortwo and the smart fourfor, there are three models available; passion, prime and proxy.
The passion model features 15” eight-spoke alloy wheels, automatic climate control, the smart audio system with Bluetooth® connectivity, and a choice of either an orange/black interior or a white/black interior.
Moving on up to the prime we find 15” five-twin-spoke black alloys with high sheen finish, a panoramic glass roof with sun protection, black leather upholstery, additional dashboard instrument pods with a cockpit clock and rev counter, heated seats and lane-keeping assist.
And right at the top-of-the-range there is the proxy model which is fitted with 16” eight-Y-spoke alloy wheels in black and features a panoramic glass roof, a blue and white interior with Artico® and cloth upholstery, lane keeping assist and a Sports Package consisting of a sports leather multifunction steering wheel, suspension lowered by 10 mm, rubber studded alloy sports pedals and an exhaust finisher in chrome.
And there’s more: edition #1
During the launch of the fortwo and forfour there will also be the special edition #1 version available which features unique exterior colour schemes.
The fortwo is fitted with white body panels, a lava orange tridion with orange/black interior, velour mats with edition #1 embroidery, the Sports Package and the smart Premium Plus Package as standard; while the forfour swops the white body panels for graphite grey metallic panels. (The Premium Plus Package is an optional extra on the original fortwo and forfour models and consists of rear parking assistance, smart media system with navigation, acomfort package which includes a height adjustable steering wheel and heated, electrically adjustable door mirrors, ambient lighting, coming home function, LED headlamps with light guide, rain and light sensors, and a rear view camera.)
Both cars feature feature five airbags, ABS, ESP, ISOFIX fixtures for the front passenger seat on the fortwo and the rear seats of the forfour, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control with electronic speed limiter, crosswind assist and a crash sensor system which activates the hazard lights as standard – thus making the cars two of the safest in the road in their class, with Collision Prevention Assist available as an option.
Over 1.5 million smart cars have been sold globally since the brand originally launched in Europe in 1998, with over 100,000 having been sold in the UK – but with the smart fortwo and smart forfour, making a smart choice has never been easier.
