You guessed it! A six seater car is a car with... six seats.
What makes them stand out is how those six seats are configured.
Many large SUVs use a 2-2-2 layout. You get two seats in the front, two individual 'captain's chairs' in the middle and two seats in the third row. Removing the traditional three-seat middle bench creates more space between passengers and can also provide a walkway into the third row.
However, not every six seater uses this formula. The Land Rover Defender 90 uses a front centre jump seat alongside the driver and front passenger, creating two rows of three.

It's a fair question. Most people will think that if I'm going for six seats, why not go for seven?
But don't jump to conclusions straight away. It usually comes down to how you plan to use the interior:

The best 6 seater cars to lease in 2026
1. Kia EV9
If you're ready to switch to electric and want a car that's built for a family of six, the EV9 is hard to beat. 6 seats are available on the range-topping GT-Line S, which comes with a 2-2-2 layout, swapping the middle row for two captain's chairs that can swivel to face the doors or the third row.
You'll get 333 litres of boot space with all three rows in use, which rises to 828 litres with the third row folded. 6 seat versions come with an official range of up to 323 miles, and ultra-rapid charging takes the battery from 10-80% in around 24 minutes.
2. BMW X7
If comfort and a premium feel are high on your list, the X7 is about as upmarket as 6 seaters get. While 7 seats come as standard, the 6 seat version replaces the middle bench with two captain's chairs that feel just as good as the front seats.
There's a pretty generous gap between the two middle seats, making access to the third row straightforward for adults and children alike. In the back, there's 326 litres of boot space with all 6 seats in place, rising to 750 litres with the third row folded, which can happen at the push of a button.
Petrol and diesel engines are available, and it's worth noting that the X7 is a pretty big car, measuring 5,181mm long and 2,000mm wide, so make sure it fits on your drive.
3. Land Rover Defender 90
If your weekends involve muddy fields, off-road tracks, and carrying 6 people, the Defender 90 is a great option. Instead of a third row, it's configured with two rows of three, with a jump seat between the driver and front passenger. This keeps it relatively compact, making it easier to manoeuvre and park than others on this list.
There are trade-offs, though. The 90 has only three doors, so getting into the back means climbing over the front seats.
Open the boot door, and there's 397 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place. It's worth noting that it's a tall space rather than a deep one, so you might have a tricky time fitting bulkier items.
4. Volkswagen Multivan
If you're after space more than anything else, an MPV is hard to beat, and the Multivan is one of the best. Seven seats come as standard, but you can choose a 2-2-2 six-seat layout, with every rear seat sitting on rails, so you can slide them back for legroom or forward for luggage.
Sliding doors on both sides make getting in and out a breeze, and the individual rear seats come with ISOFIX points. There's 469 litres of boot space with all seats in use in the standard-length model, or 763 litres in the long version.
5. Hyundai Ioniq 9
The Ioniq 9 is ideal for drivers who like the sound of a large electric 6 seater, but want generous range. The 6 seat version is available with the top-spec Calligraphy trim, with two captain's chairs that can rotate to face the third row when you're parked.
A feature we like is that passengers in all three rows get their own USB-C charging points, which helps keep everyone connected on those longer (and argument-prone) journeys.
There's 338 litres of boot space with all 6 seats in use, and you'll get a range of up to 372 miles.
6. Mazda CX-80
If you don't want to go electric, the CX-80 is a 6 seater that gives you a choice between plug-in hybrid and diesel powertrains. The plug-in hybrid can cover around 38 miles on pure electric power, which is long enough for the school run or some commutes to work.
Selected versions come with two individual captain’s chairs in the middle row, and you have the option of a walkway through to the third row or a fixed centre console between them, which is a nice touch.
There’s 258 litres of boot space with all seats in use, rising to 687 litres when the third row is folded.
7. Volkswagen ID.Buzz
The ID.Buzz is a family MPV with retro-inspired looks and is sure to spark some family road trip nostalgia. However, it's not all about its looks; it's also a very good car. The long-wheelbase version can be ordered with six seats, swapping the middle bench for two captain's chairs with their own armrests.
Sliding doors on both sides make getting in and out easy, even in tight spaces, and there are ISOFIX points in the third row as well as the second. You get around 306 litres of boot space with all three rows in use, and the long-wheelbase model has an official range of up to 291 miles.
8. Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai must be doing something right, with the Santa Fe being the second of their cars on this list. A strong all-rounder with good looks and a commanding road presence, the 6 seater version of this large SUV comes with two captain's chairs in the second row and a regular third row, allowing everyone to enjoy a luxurious ride.
There are ISOFIX points in the third row as well as the second, which is great news if you've got more than two young children. Fold the third row away, and there's a generous 628 litres of boot space in the hybrid, and the boxy, upright shape makes the most of every bit of it.
Whether a 6 seater or 7 seater is better completely depends on your personal situation and driving needs.
A 6 seater with a pair of captain's chairs gives each passenger their own seat and room to breathe. You'll also likely get a walkway between the captain's chairs, meaning you can reach the back without folding a seat.
With a 7 seater, you'll be able to carry an extra passenger but often at the expense of interior space and practicality. The cabin will be cramped, and if capacity is full, there won't be much room for shoulders and legs, especially on the third row.
There are some good options for electric 6 seaters, including the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and VW ID.Buzz.
