Audi A4 Saloon Review 2023

The Audi A4 Saloon is a stylish executive saloon car that's been ever-present on roads in Britain for the last 20 years. Now in its fifth generation, the A4 Saloon comes with a slick exterior, a class-leading interior, and a range of economical petrol and diesel engines.

Rivals to the Audi A4 Saloon include the BMW 3 Series Saloon, Skoda Superb, Mercedes C-Class Saloon, and the Volkswagen Arteon.

Audi A4 Saloon Pros:

  • Lots of equipment comes as standard
  • Class-leading interior with premium materials used
  • Economical engines

Audi A4 Saloon Cons:

  • No electric or hybrid option available
  • Rivals have better on-the-road performance
  • Three adults will struggle for comfort in the rear

Audi A4 Saloon Key Features:

  • Prominent front grille and creases from front to back
  • Luxurious interior featuring high-quality materials
  • 460-litre boot which can be extended to 965 litres with the rear seats folded
  • A range of petrol and diesel engines available
  • Four trim levels: Technik, Sport Edition, S Line, Black Edition

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The Audi A4 Saloon's exterior is one of the most stylish on the market. It has a striking front grille, LED headlights, and creases from the front to the back.

There's a good amount of room when inside the A4 Saloon. There's plenty of leg and headroom up front, whilst the rear can accommodate two adults over 6 feet tall. Storage space could be improved throughout the cabin; however, you can add the optional storage pack for more practicality.

The Audi A4 Saloon has a boot space of 460 litres, which can be extended to 965 litres with the rear seats folded in a 40:20:40 formation. This sits between the bigger BMW 3 Series Saloon and the slightly smaller Mercedes C-Class Saloon.

Interior and Trims

The interior of the A4 Saloon is the definition of luxury. There's a range of well-crafted, high-quality materials used throughout, and this is complemented by wood veneer or real metal finishes to the dashboard.

Technology is also excellent in the A4 Saloon. Coming as standard is a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a built-in sat-nav, and an eight-speaker stereo system. You'll also find Audi's 12.3-inch virtual cockpit display that provides all the essential information to the driver.

Four trim levels are available for the Audi A4 Saloon, including Technik, Sport Edition, S Line, and Black Edition.

The entry-level Technik comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, and heated front seats.

The Sport Edition adds to this with 18-inch alloy wheels, ambient interior lighting, sports seats with trimmed leather, and tinted windows.

S Line comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, a 20mm lowered suspension, an aluminium silver trim, Alcantara leather seats, stainless steel sports pedals, and S Line decoration.

The range-topping Black Edition has a titanium black styling pack, making the grille, rear spoiler, and air intakes jet black.

Power and Performance

A range of petrol and diesel engines are available for the A4 Saloon. Starting with the petrol options, there's the entry-level 35 TFSI which has a respectable 148bhp but needs to be revved hard to build up speed. The 40 TFSI is a more powerful option returning 201bhp and achieving 0-62mph in just over seven seconds.

Although diesel is dwindling in popularity, they're the better option for the A4 Saloon. The top pick is the 35 TDI, which comes with 161bhp; it easily cruises around town but can also accelerate to motorway speeds efficiently. It can achieve 0-62mph in just over eight seconds and has a fuel consumption of 57.6–58.9mpg.

Depending on which trim you choose, you'll have varying suspensions. The Technik and Sport Editions are more family oriented and come with the Comfort Dynamic setting, which makes for an enjoyable and comfortable drive. Move to the S Line and Black Edition trims, and you'll get Sport suspension which sharpens on-the-road performance.

The A4 Saloon handles well, the steering is accurate, and it's well-weighted when cornering. One of the standout elements of the A4 Saloon is the lack of road noise when driving, which is a massive plus if you plan on racking up the miles.

Prices for the new Audi A4 Saloon start from £34,870.00 OTR* or to lease from £306.05 per month.

The car drives well with very smooth gear changes and the flat bottom steering wheel has a great feel. There is plenty of performances when needed. The 360 degree camera gives a very clear view of exactly where the car is positioned when parking or undertaking other manoeuvres. Overall a great car.

I like the car very much, and would consider a new one when the term is finished. My only complaint is there is too much technology these days, and I am still working out how things work, not the actual driving part, but the interior light, things like that, so I have no complaints about the car really, it is a superb, smooth ride, and easy to drive.

I wish I went for a more powerful engine and maybe a diesel due to the motorway driving I have to do. But over all a brilliant car
