Audi A6 Saloon Review 2023

The Audi A6 Saloon is a large, comfortable saloon that blends sleek styling with cutting-edge tech and unimpeachable build quality. It has a range of high-tech hybrid engines, plenty of high-tech features and a spacious cabin.

Rivals to the Audi A6 Saloon include the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Genesis G80, Volvo S90 and Jaguar XF.

Our Audi A6 Saloon review covers:

Audi A6 Saloon Key Features

  • Sharp exterior design with narrow headlights and a coupé-like flowing roof line
  • High-class posh interior with plush materials and stylish glossy trims
  • 530 litres boot and 360 litres in the plug-in hybrid models
  • Range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines
  • Four trim levels, including Sport, S Line, Black Edition and Vorsprung

Audi A6 Saloon Pros and Cons:

Pros:
  • Comfortable ride
  • Impressive economy
  • Futuristic technology
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Slightly firm ride
  • Rivals are more fun to drive

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The Audi A6 is a large saloon that blends sleek styling with cutting-edge technology. The new A6 has a sharper design than its predecessor, with strong curves above the wheel arches, emphasising the Quattro lineage. It also has a widened exterior frame, side air inlets, sporty chrome trim, and narrow headlights, which help it stand out on the road. Being an Audi, the A6 keeps its sporty fashion with the exterior mirrors atop the door rails and the coupé-like flowing roof line.

Inside the Audi A6 Saloon, there are very few things to complain about. The seats provide great leg and back support, and the centre console has a huge storage compartment and a pair of cupholders. The driving posture is also excellent.

As for boot space, the Audi A6 Saloon offers 530 litres of room, identical to what you'll find in the BMW 5 Series, but the Mercedes E-Class gets an extra 10 litres of space. However, it's important to know the 530 litre boot capacity only applies to the petrol and diesel versions of the Audi A6. The plug-in hybrid Audi A6's boot is even smaller at 360 litres due to how the battery pack is positioned in the Saloon.

Interior and Trims

The Audi A6 Saloon gets a high-class posh interior that feels even more luxurious than the Mercedes E-Class interior. The car's standard sat-nav, smartphone mirroring, and even the climate control systems can all be controlled through the car's enormous infotainment displays, which are stuffed with luxurious materials, sleek glossy accents, and large displays.

The Audi A6 infotainment system is easy to navigate, particularly if you choose the Virtual Cockpit option, as its screen can be switched between different views. The optional 10.0-inch display is even better than the 9.0-inch base screen, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto make it simple to connect your phone to the Audi.

Four trim levels are available, including Sport, S Line, Black Edition and Vorsprung.

Sport models come with a triple-screen infotainment display with smartphone mirroring and satellite navigation built-in, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and brake lights, leather seats with heating functions in the front, and four-way electric lumbar adjustment for the driver. It also comes with DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate control, lane departure warning, cruise control, a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.

S Line models add a sporty body kit, 19-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, matrix LED headlights and electric leather/Alcantara sports seats.

Black Edition models have many black exterior features, such as a grille, mirrors and window trim. Also, come with 20-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, and a premium BOSE surround speaker.

Top-of-the-range Vorsprung models come with 21-inch alloy wheels, adaptive air suspension or damper control depending on the engine choice and dynamic all-wheel steering, except for 40 TDI models. It also has sports front seats, full leather interior trim, dual infotainment screens and a large driver's display.

Power and Performance

Audi offers the A6 Saloon with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines.

audi-a6-saloon-interior

Two diesel, three petrol and a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid setup system are available from Audi. All engines are hybrids, but only the plug-in one can be used for electric-only driving. The other engines have mild hybrid technology, aiding in power delivery and fuel efficiency.

The A6 is remarkably sharp to drive, making it more of a challenger to the BMW 5 Series than ever before. Previous Audi A6s have felt underwhelming when driven. The A6s progressive steering provides powerful driving dynamics with an exceptionally sporty steering transmission. This improves manoeuvrability and agility, especially when paired with Audi Drive Select, putting you in complete control.

Overall, the Audi A6 Saloon is an excellent luxurious saloon that blends sleek styling and faultless build quality.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Audi A6 Saloon start from £39,605.00 OTR* or to lease from £423.00 per month.

The car itself is excellent. It’s spacious, the quality is excellent, the ride is good, the performance and economy is good, and it has everything that you would reasonably need on it. However, there are two reasons why I would not have another one, nor would I recommend the car to others. Firstly, the active lane assist twice steered me into danger in the first month of ownership. On both occasions it could not cope where lanes had been coned off and there existed temporary lane studs (at road works). On the first occasion it attempted to steer me into the cones, and on the second occasion it attempted to steer me towards other traffic. Had I not been alert and taken back control of the steering wheel I would have without doubt crashed. Following email correspondence with Audi on how to permanently disable the feature, it transpired that it can only be disabled every journey by pressing a button on the end of the indicator stalk, which I now have to do. Secondly, and more seriously, the car has so far (1 year into a 3 year lease) had 3 episodes of “phantom braking”. Without warning or reason, the car has slammed on the brakes, reducing the car to an almost stop before releasing the brakes. Thankfully, on each occasion, the car did not skid, nor was there a car close behind. Had the conditions been icy, I would have without doubt crashed. On investigation, it is part of a feature called Audi Pre sense, which you can permanently set to one of 3 levels, but like the lane assist, you cannot permanently turn it off. You can turn it off every journey, but unlike the lane assist where it is via a readily accessible button, this feature requires you to turn it off via several complex layers of menu on the touch screen, which is simply not practical to do every journey. After researching, it seems that Audi (and some other manufacturers) do not allow the customer to permanently disable these features in order to get a higher NCAP safety rating. The irony is that although the car has a high NCAP rating, the reality is that these features do not work in all road scenarios, and without doubt place the driver and passengers in serious danger. So, although I like the car itself, I absolutely would not have another Audi A6, nor would I recommend it to others. If you decide to get an Audi A6, please be aware of these serious risks. I hope the review is useful.

I'm always attracted by a deal which is why I took the A6. As a motorway car it is great. The electrics are a little temperamental, otherwise I am enjoying driving it.

The vehicle is excellent and I have no complaints. The build quality is excellent and it is really comfortable to drive. The rear seats folding down gives excellent luggage capacity for a saloon.

Generally all good. However, it is slightly disappointing that a car of this quality doesn't have electric seats, tyre temperature gauge, and automatic dimming headlamps. It is compared to an E Class Mercedes, which I had recently and all of those features were included.
