BMW 4 Series Coupe Review 2023

Looking to make a statement on the road? The BMW 4 Series Coupe is the car for you. The 4 Series Coupe is a stylish coupe with a premium interior and a powerful engine range.

Rivals to the 4 Series Coupe include the Audi A5 Coupe, Lexus RC, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, and Ford Mustang

Our BMW 4 Series Coupe review covers:

BMW 4 Series Coupe Key Features

  • Large front grille complemented by a slick exterior design
  • Luxurious interior with premium materials and superb technology
  • 440-litre boot
  • Two petrol engines
  • Three trim levels

BMW 4 Series Coupe Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Fun to drive and great engine choices
  • Surprisingly practical
  • Luxurious interior with great tech

Cons:

  • Boot space falls short of some rivals
  • Some might not like the front grille
  • No plug-in or electric version

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

If there was a German version of James Bond, I'd suspect he'd drive a BMW 4 Series Coupe. Its exterior is the perfect balance of aggression and class, coming with a kidney front grille, a long bonnet, and a beautiful sloping rear roofline. For me, it's the best-looking coupe available, and that's some statement considering its stylish rivals like the Lexus RC Coupe

On the off chance that you need the 4 Series Coupe to carry four passengers, you'll find that it's surprisingly roomy. In the front, there's loads of space for two passengers over six feet tall, and once passengers in the rear squeeze behind the front seats, they'll find a good amount of legroom. Rear headroom is a bit limited because of the roof, but there's just enough space to ensure it's not uncomfortable.

Boot space comes in at 440 litres, which is slightly smaller than the Audi A5 Coupe. There's still enough room for a set of golf clubs, and you can fold the rear seats 40/20/40 to fit longer items.

Interior and Trims

The interior of the 4 Series Coupe is one of the best around. Everything feels excellently built, and there's a range of premium materials, such as soft-touch plastics and a leather steering wheel. It probably just falls short of the A5 Coupe, but this is us being picky.

All versions of the 4 Series Coupe get a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment that features a DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, voice command, and built-in sat-nav. Like in most BMWs, it can be controlled via a rotary controller on the centre divide.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument display comes as standard that's sharp and displays all your relevant information.

Three trims are available: M Sport, M Sport Pro, and M440i.

M Sport has 18-inch jet black alloy wheels, LED headlights, front sport seats, an M Sport leather steering wheel, three-zone automatic air conditioning, ambient lighting, anthracite headlining, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, parking assistant, and variable sport steering.

M Sport Pro adds 19-inch black alloy wheels, metallic paint in aventurine red III, dravid grey or tanzanite blue, sun protection glass, individual aluminium fabric interior, vernasca leather upholstery, and a HiFi loudspeaker audio system.

M440i has 19-inch bi-colour grey alloy wheels, an aluminium rhombicle interior trim, adaptive suspension, an M Sport differential, and access to the exclusive mild-hybrid M440i engine.

Power and Performance

Two engines are available for the 4 Series Coupe, the 420i and M440i. Both come paired with an eight-speed semi-automatic transmission and are available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The entry-level 2.0-litre 420i is our pick of the range. More than good enough for the average driver, the 420i has a power output of 181hp and achieves 0-62mph in under eight seconds (times slightly vary depending on trim).

It's available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive and should achieve a fuel economy of around 40mpg.

Those wanting maximum performance can go for the range-topping M440i. Packing a hefty 374hp and shooting from 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds, the M440i rivals the performance-based engines in the Ford Mustang Fastback and Mercedes C-Class Coupe

The M440i also features mild-hybrid technology that gathers energy during braking or coasting and converts it into electricity to support the engine. This contributes to decent fuel economy, coming in at 36mpg.

BMW 4 Series Coupe interior

The 4 Series Coupe is a joy to drive. Whether you're cruising around town or having fun on a country road, the 4 Series Coupe provides an engaging driving experience.

Every model comes with variable steering as standard, which makes handling more sensitive in tight spaces but offers less help on faster roads to prevent it from feeling too sensitive. This is handy around town but can be slightly hit-and-miss at high speed. To mitigate it, switch to sport mode, which adds weight to the steering and makes it more engaging.

Engine noise is minimal around town but provides a nice roar when pushed hard. The range-topping M440i sounds wonderful when pushed hard, so get that window down if you’re in a tunnel!

Our only criticism of the 4 Series Coupe's performance is its suspension. It's quite firm, and you'll certainly notice bumpy roads, more than in the softer A5 Coupe. We'd suggest going for the optional adaptive suspension, which softens ride quality at the push of a button.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new BMW 4 Series Coupe start from £43,020.00 OTR* or to lease from £517.58 per month.

BMW ride and comfort is excellent. The style of the car is eye catching. Performance is very good. Only disadvantage is as a 2 door the doors are larger and more heavy and you have to think more about space around you when you part. This is not a criticism it is an observation about 2 door cars which was the choice I made.
