BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé Review 2022

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is a bold and commanding five-door coupé that brings more practicality to the 4 Series range, striking a nice balance between performance and functionality.

Rivals to the 4 Series Gran Coupé include the Audi A5 Sportback, Kia Stinger, Mercedes CLA, and Volkswagen Arteon.

Our BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé review covers:

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé Key Features

  • Wide front grille and slim LED lights
  • Premium interior with an infotainment system and digital cockpit
  • 470 litre boot which can be extended to 1290 litres with the rear seats folded down
  • A range of petrol and diesel engines available
  • Three trim levels: M Sport, M Sport Pro, and M440i xDrive

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Most practical BMW 4 Series
  • Good range of equipment comes as standard
  • Mild-hybrid technology available

Cons:

  • No electric or plug-in hybrid option
  • Headroom tight in the rear
  • Expensive to lease

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The first thing you'll notice about the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is the imposing front kidney grille with a hexagon pattern which gives it a serious road presence. The grille is underlined by large air intakes and slim LED lights, and towards the rear, it's finished off with an angled tailgate.

bmw-4-series-gran-coupe-2022-exterior

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is the most practical in the 4 Series range. There's plenty of space in the front for anyone above six feet tall, and they'll also find a big glovebox and a helpful centre armrest. There's slightly less space in the back, and taller folk might find their heads hitting the roof.

Boot space for the 4 Series Gran Coupé comes in at 470 litres which can be extended to 1290 litres with the rear seats split 40/20/40 and folded flat. This pips the regular 4 Series by 30 litres, making it bigger than the Audi A5 Sportback and Mercedes CLA

Interior and Trims

The interior of the 4 Series Gran Coupé is what you'd expect. It features a range of pleasant materials which are nice to touch, and even though there are some fewer quality materials, they're in well-hidden places.

Coming standard in the 4 Series Gran Coupé is a 10.25-inch infotainment system which can be controlled as a touch screen or through the rotary controller between the front seats. It comes with sat-nav, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay as standard. There's also a sharp 12.3-inch digital instrument display behind the steering wheel.

Three trim levels are available, the M Sport, M Sport Pro, and the M440i xDrive.

The entry-level M Sport comes with 18-inch grey alloy wheels, an M Sport leather steering wheel, three-zone automatic air conditioning, and front and rear parking sensors.

The M Sport Pro adds to this with 19-inch black alloy wheels, M Sport brakes with red callipers, M Sport seat belts, and M adaptive suspension.

The top-of-the-range M440i xDrive comes with 19-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels, an aluminium tetragon interior trim, extended high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, and features its exclusive engine with mild-hybrid technology.

Power and Performance

A range of petrol and diesel engines are available for the 4 Series Gran Coupé.

The entry-level 420i petrol engine will be good enough for most. It's a nice balance between price and performance, coming with 184bhp and achieving an official 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds.

If you want more power, go for the range-topping M440i xDrive, which features mild-hybrid technology. It comes with a whopping 375bhp and achieves 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds, making it a very exciting drive.

One of the diesel options would be a good choice if you plan on covering some miles. They all feature mild-hybrid technology taking their fuel economy above 50mpg, and they're also more than powerful enough, coming with 190bhp and achieving 0-62mph between 7.3 and 7.6 seconds.

All 4 Series Gran Coupé's come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is responsive and acts with little delay when you want to accelerate. However, steering can be too overwhelming, making on-the-road performance a little jumpy.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé start from £43,110.00 OTR* or to lease from £495.20 per month.

The vehicle is an excellent all rounder, we have had many lease vehicles over the years ranging from Land Rovers to Mercedes. This BMW however is one of the best so far. The power, responsiveness of the steering and overall layout of the internal space is great not to mention its sleek look from the exterior. If you want an M-Sport that is sporty but not as aggressive looking and sounding as an M4 and blends in at the local supermarket then this is the vehicle for you. I cant recommend it enough.

Leg room in the rear is too small. It is a nice drive, however the feel of the interior is outdated

i am really impressed with the vehicles technology which gives me warnings should anything at all is amiss. The drive is extremely comfortable and storage space is excellent without me feeling I am driving a vehicle too large to cope with.

Smooth powerful drive. Great handling. Only changes I would make relate to specification and upgrades. If I ordered again I would want reversing cameras and folding mirrors.
