Citroen C4 Hatchback Review 2023

The Citroen C4 Hatchback is a compact car that's great for small families looking for a dependable motor. It has a comfortable interior, good technology, and is affordable.

Rivals to the C4 Hatchback include the Audi A3 Sportback, Ford Focus Hatchback, Seat Leon Hatchback, and Volkswagen Golf Hatchback

Our Citroen C4 Hatchback review covers:

Citroen C4 Hatchback Key Features

  • Unique exterior stylish with bold front grille and square rear end
  • Comfortable interior with a decent amount of kit
  • 380-litre boot
  • Two petrol and one diesel engine available
  • Four trim levels

Citroen C4 Hatchback Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Smooth ride at low speeds
  • Affordable
  • Good amount of kit as standard

Cons:

  • Not the most exciting hatchback
  • Could do with a bigger boot
  • Rivals better to drive

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The Citroen C4 Hatchback comes with funky styling, and I'm still unsure whether I like it. There's a bold front grille and sleek LED headlights up front, while the rear is square and has a raised spoiler. It's a mix between an estate, a hatchback, and a sporty SUV.

The C4 Hatchback has enough space for five people, but fitting a small family is more realistic. Two adults can easily fit in the front, but you do feel cramped in as you sit quite close to the windscreen pillars. Two kids can fit in the back, but adding a third might be tricky, especially with the central hump and armrest.

Boot space comes in at 380 litres, which is the same as the Seat Leon Hatchback but falls short of the Ford Focus Hatchback. There are a few handy features, such as an adjustable boot floor from Sense Plus trim and above.

Interior and Trims

The interior of the C4 Hatchback is one of Citroen's best yet. It's well-laid out, features plenty of premium materials, and looks good. We particularly like the blend of tech and traditional buttons, meaning you're not overwhelmed using the infotainment system. It's undoubtedly one of the best around, but it doesn't have as many premium materials as the Audi A3 Sportback

On the dashboard is a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that displays clear graphics and is straightforward to use. Entry-level models don't get sat-nav, but you do get a DAB radio, Bluetooth, voice command, and smartphone mirroring.

Upgrade to Sense Plus, and you'll get sat-nav and a head-up display on the windscreen, while the range-topping Shine Plus comes with wireless phone charging.

Four trims are available for the C4 Hatchback: Sense, Sense Plus, C-Series Edition, and Shine Plus.

Sense has 18-inch bit-one Aeroblade alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights in 'V' signature, a 10-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a grained leather steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver's seat, rear parking sensors, cruise control with a speed limiter, and a standard safety pack.

Sense Plus has My Citroen Plus (a 10-inch high-res touchscreen user interface with sat-nav), Citroen Smart Pad Support, a driver's head-up display, a two-position boot floor, and an anti-theft alarm.

C-Series Edition adds a Citroen HiFi system, blind-spot detection, an anodised bronze colour pack, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors with a reversing camera, and keyless entry/start.

Shine Plus has diamond-cut alloy wheels, an Alcantara interior ambience, adaptive cruise control, highway driver assist and safety pack plus.

Power and Performance

Two petrols and one diesel make up the engine range in the C4 Hatchback. Both come with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Kicking off the engines is the 1.2-litre petrol turbo, available in two power outputs: 100hp and 130hp. They both return the same fuel economy of 54.3mpg, but the 130hp unit shoots from 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds rather than the 100hp's 10.8 seconds.

If you want a diesel engine, your only option is the 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130hp unit. It does 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds and returns a fuel economy of 58.8mpg.

Citroen C4 Hatchback interior

When on the road, the C4 Hatchback offers a balanced and comfortable ride, making it great for both city commuters and long-distance drivers. It also returns competitive fuel economy regardless of where you're driving.

Its refined suspension system ensures a smooth journey over most surfaces, while responsive steering and agile handling enhance the overall experience in the C4 Hatchback. There's no denying it's not as fun to drive as the Volkswagen Golf Hatchback or Ford Focus Hatchback, but the C4 prioritises comfort over sporty performance.

I have found the vehicle comfortable and ideal for what I need with regards to my travelling requirements. My only major criticism is that the interior is very boring, not lights in the foot well, around the doors etc which I think is always nice and gives a nice ambience to the vehicle. I also notice that when I I press any of the command buttons they are not always super reactive, slight delay.

This is the first time I have had a Citroen and I am smitten. The overal performance is very impressive. The only negative I had was the stop/start function which was a little to sensitive but have since disabled it.

I love everything about the car, it looks great, drives smoothly and the boot space is fantastic! One thing that could be added is the ability to increase the driver seat height.
