Fiat Tipo Hatchback Review 2023

The Fiat Tipo is a well-rounded budget hatchback that offers more than enough practicality for most situations. It is easy to drive, offers decent space, and is good value for money.

Rivals to the Fiat Tipo Hatchback include the Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Renault Megane.

Our Fiat Tipo Hatchback review covers:

Fiat Tipo Hatchback Key Features

  • Smart and businesslike exterior styling
  • Modern interior with chrome detailing
  • 440 litres of boot space
  • Range of petrol and diesel engines
  • Two trim levels, including Garmin and Cross

Fiat Tipo Hatchback Pros and Cons:

  • Spacious cabin
  • Smart exterior design
  • Handles poor roads well

  • Plain interior
  • Build quality could be better
  • Poor engine selection

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The exterior of the Fiat Tipo Hatchback is smart and businesslike but lacks charisma or imagination in its styling. The new Tipo Hatchback gets a wide grille, chrome details and a double-bubble roofline that all give the hatchback presence on the road.

The interior of the Fiat Tipo Hatchback isn't like its retro-inspired Fiat 500 line range and instead focuses on basic functionality and occupant comfort. The rear seats have impressive legroom, and the tall rear roofline provides decent headroom.

As for boot space, the Tipo Hatchback can hold 440 litres of room which is more spacious than the Renault Megane. The rear seat bases can be flipped forward, allowing the seat backs to be folded completely flat, and the lack of discernible load lip makes loading heavy or bulky items easy, too.

Interior and Trims

The Fiat Tipo Hatchback interior is covered in an Alcantara-like fabric, but the instrument binnacle floats on a sea of dull black plastic with several scratchy bits, making the Fiat Tipo feel cheaper than some rivals.

The interior features the FIAT Uconnect system with a clear touchscreen infotainment display, satellite navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Two trim levels are available: Garmin and Cross.

Garmin models come with 17-inch Cross alloy wheels with orange details, orange exterior details, matt grey door mirrors, interior seats with orange details and Garmin Logo.

Cross models come with 17-inch alloy wheels with diamond cut, glossy black front grid, ice matte, low grid inserts, ice matte front/rear skid plates, ice matte side skirts and a 7" Touchscreen Radio with 3D Navigation, Aux-in and DAB Apple Carplay/ Android Auto Connectivity. It also adds Lane Keep Assist, Speed Limiter, Blind Spot Assist, Autonomous Emergency Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Speed Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, Fiat offers the Fiat Tipo Hatchback with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines in five different power outputs.

1.4-litre or 1.6-litre engines power the petrol options, and the diesel options are powered by a 1.3-litre or 1.6-litre engine, all offering decent fuel economy. However, the turbo diesel engine can be sluggish in city driving with a rush of extra power that appears out of nowhere.

The Fiat Tipo Hatchback feels planted and safe on the road, but it can't match rivals like the Ford Focus or Seat Leon for driver enjoyment due to noticeable body lean around corners and overly light steering.

Overall, the Fiat Tipo hatchback is a decent car that offers good value for money. It has plenty of practicality and features an impressive array of technology in its interior. While it may not be as exciting to drive as some other cars in its class, it provides a comfortable ride that will suit most drivers' needs.

Sam Fiat Tipo Hatchback

Overall it’s a great family vehicle. The boot is huge, the interior space is brilliant and easily seats our family including a huge car seat in the back. Performance isn’t essential for us. But is sufficiently fine. The finish is what you would expect from a value car, but has everyone you need. Albeit the sat nav screen is on the small side. Good looking car, which personally I think outshines it’s rivals.
