Ford Puma Review Review 2021

The Puma is back with a new sporty design and has already won the What Car? Car of the Year 2020 award.

Designed to truly stand out in the highly competitive SUV market, the Ford Puma not only looks the part thanks to its stylish, sporty and seductive design, but is also one of the first vehicles to benefit from Ford’s EcoBoost technology for enhanced fuel efficiency without compromising on power or performance.

Our Ford Puma review covers:

Ford Puma Key Features

  • Sporty and athletic SUV-inspired design
  • 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine available in 125 PS and 155 PS variants
  • Mild-hybrid technology for enhanced fuel efficiency
  • Best-in-class load space of 456 litres
  • First vehicle in its segment to offer hands-free tailgate and massage front seats
  • Winner of the What Car? Car of the Year 2020 Award

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The new Ford Puma is the first vehicle to feature Ford’s new ‘human centric’ design. Its expressive front-end with its imposing front grille and distinctive “canoe-shaped” headlamps make the Puma instantly recognisable on the road. At the rear, the car’s low, sloping roofline and LED fog lamps not only make the Puma look different to any other compact crossover on the market, but also deliver a class-leading luggage capacity of 456 litres.

Ford Puma exterior

Inside, the Puma’s upscale interior is designed to offer a smooth and relaxing drive with segment-first lumbar massage front seats to revitalise tired muscles on longer journeys, as well as a full-length openable panorama roof for a spacious and airy feel. A wireless charging pad for recharging smartphones whilst on the move is also available, with Ford’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ compatibility at no extra cost.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, the all-new Ford Puma is one of the first vehicles to benefit from Ford’s sophisticated mild-hybrid technology, specifically designed to enhance fuel efficiency while complementing Ford’s fun-to-drive experience.

Offered in 125 PS and 155 PS variants, the Puma's 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine works with Ford’s intelligent, self-regulating mild-hybrid system to deliver fuel efficiency improvements of up to 9% without compromising on power or performance.

In addition, customers can choose from advanced range of Ford EcoBoost petrol and Ford EcoBlue diesel engines that are supported by standard Auto Start-Stop for further reduced running costs and a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission.

A single plug-in hybrid engine is also available. This combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a maximum output of 222bhp and up to 34 miles on electric-only power. Vauxhall claims the PHEV is capable of 192mpg (WLTP) and emits just 31g/km of CO2, making it a popular choice with company car drivers

Out on the road, the Vauxhall Grandland combines comfort with efficient performance. While it lags behind the Citroen C5 Aircross for bump absorption, it handles well and offers a relaxing drive. It's also relatively quiet and easy to manoeuvre, particularly around town, where its light steering helps you easily negotiate busy city streets or tight parking spaces.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Ford Puma start from £24,660.00 OTR* or to lease from £240.97 per month.

Leasing the new Ford Puma offers many benefits over buying, and is often the cheaper alternative to buying. All lease deals with Nationwide Vehicle Contracts come with breakdown recovery, road tax and the manufacturer's warranty included as standard. What's more, Nationwide Vehicle Contracts will also deliver your brand new Puma direct to your front door, making leasing easier than ever before.

*'On the road' price correct at time of publication and includes one year’s road fund license, DVLA first registration fee and number plate fee.

Very underpowered, engine feels like it is struggling at all revs around urban environments. OK on the motorway. Good boot space. Poor mpg. Touchscreen not the best, quite laggy. Compared to our last rental (Seat Leon) its a bit underwhelming. Definitely wouldn't recommend or lease this vehicle again.

We absolutely love this car! Great to drive. Lots of room, especially with the storage in the boot floor. Unbelievable performance for a 1000cc engine. Have averaged over 47mpg and most of our miles are around town on short journeys. Can't recommend this car highly enough and especially at the discounted price we got it for.

When we first got the vehicle it broke down on our first long journey to the Midlands which caused us alot of stress and disappointment. Apparently nothing was found wrong with it. But reading reviews on forums I found out it appeared to be a common fault with other Puma owners. We end up worrying about whenever we go on a long journey in case it happens again. Thankfully it hasn't yet. Apart from that the car fine.

Your rates are now expensive I asked for a mileage adjustment and was going to be charged £700 for an extra 2.5 k for a year I won’t be bothering and will consider another lease company this year . £120 to change details on a computer is a rip off . Such a shame I have leased from you for about six years.

Just a couple of things that bug me. Given this is a supposed high end spec car it is lacking features I would expect..ie. Air vents in rear, USB connection in rear, electronic parking brake, auto temp controlled heating. Ride a bit stiff but a nice car to drive overall.

Great versatile car, surprising acceleration for a 1.0ltr engine. Good fuel consumption if driven economically.

It is a joy to drive, combining many of the features of previous cars in one package. I can't fault it! It is understandably rated as 'top small SUV'.

I am pleased with most of it. I find the heating system a bit temperamental - it doesn't stay a consistent heat. It would be value for money except that I paid for extra mileage which wasn't used due to the covid lockdowns - and then the price increased.
