Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Review 2021

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a small, premium SUV with some of the fanciest 4x4 tech on the market.

Featuring a high-class interior and more off-road ability than you'll ever need, the Range Rover Evoque is an excellent lease alternative to rivals such as the Audi Q3, BMW X2, Volvo XC40 and Mercedes GLA.

Our Range Rover Evoque review covers:

Range Rover Evoque Key Features

  • Sporty, chiselled body style with huge headlights
  • Spacious and high-quality interior with upmarket fabrics
  • 591-litre boot, which expands to 1,383 litres with rear seats down
  • Two diesel, three petrol and a plug-in hybrid engine available
  • Range of trims including R-Dynamic, S, SE, HSE, HST and Autobiography

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The Evoque may be the smallest Range Rover model, but its chiselled body style certainly makes it stand out from the crowd. Inspired by the Range Rover Velar, the Evoque's huge sharp headlights give this small SUV a sporty look, while its eye-catching angles and proportions make it instantly recognisable on the road.

Unlike the old Evoque, the latest generation model comes with five doors as standard, instead of three, making it easy for passengers to get in and out of the back, hence its appeal with growing families.

There's also enough space in the back for six-foot-tall adults to ride comfortably, and the seats are nice and supportive. However, the Evoque's sloping roof does mean that rivals such as the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 boast better headroom and rear space.

In terms of boot space, the Range Rover Evoque has 591 litres on offer, which is excellent compared to the BMW X2's 470 litres. You can also expand the boot capacity to 1,383 litres if you fold the rear seats down, which can be split in a 40:20:40 configuration by a simple handle in the boot.

The Evoque also comes with plenty of practicality-boosting accessories such as seat-back stowage, a rubber boot mat and a cover to protect the rear bumper when loading and unloading luggage.

Interior and Trims

Inside, the Range Rover Evoque's interior is equally as appealing as its stylish exterior. Its shiny, minimalist dashboard features glossy trims around the slender air vents and the central infotainment display. You also get a single 10-inch touchscreen as standard, which looks more futuristic than the basic controls you get in the BMW X2 and Audi Q3.

A range of trims are available with a generous specification as standard, including 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, Bluetooth and DAB radio on the entry-level model.

The Evoque S models come with 18-inch alloy wheels, heated leather seats and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SE models add a 360-degree parking camera, a Touch Pro Duo dual-screen infotainment system and 20-inch alloy wheels.

R-Dynamic models boast an enhanced exterior and interior style with perforated leather seats and a host of dark satin and copper styling touches. The range-topping HSE R-Dynamic adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a powered tailgate, premium LED headlights, high beam assist and keyless entry and start.

A luxury Autobiography model is also available and comes kitted out with a panoramic sunroof, 21-inch alloy wheels, four-zone climate control, 24-way heated and cooled seats, a 360-degree camera and a Meridian stereo.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, the Range Rover Evoque is available with two diesel engines, three petrol engines and a plug-in hybrid variant, two or four-wheel drive and a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Diesel options include a D165 2.0-litre turbocharged with 163bhp and a D200 version with 201bhp, ideal for drivers who cover many miles.

Petrol engines include the P200 2.0-litre turbocharged with 197bhp, the P250 2.0-litre with 246bhp and the top-spec P300 2.0-litre engine, which offers hot-hatch levels of performance with 300bhp.

A P300e plug-in hybrid is also available, combining a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol unit which powers the front wheels, with a 107bhp electric motor which controls the rear wheels, for a respectable 197bhp.

Out on the road, the Range Rover Evoque is as happy cruising to the shops as it is clawing its way up rugged farm tracks, thanks to its fantastic driving aids, such as Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system.

For those who mainly drive around town, the 2WD model is best suited, making for a leisurely drive thanks to its wide range of tech, including a clever camera system that lets you manoeuvre in tight spaces without scraping the alloy wheels on tall kerbs.

Within the first year the car has had to be repaired 4 times including one where it broken down completely and required to be towed. Currently having faults with the door handles not coming out intermittently meaning there are times I have to climb through the boot to get into the car. Not the look you want when you are driving a Range Rover!

The cabin headroom is a bit small and I have had a metallic noise from behind the dash at 1200 revs which is very annoying

I am happy with the vehicle other than the fact that it had been back to the main dealers twice due to an engine management light activating. No cost but irritating on a vehicle less than 12 months old

The Evoque is an impressive car, I owned the previous model and this mild hybrid is surprisingly fuel efficient for such a vehicle, never less than 40mpg. Power from the 180 engine is quite adequate. It’s a nice car to be in and so capable it makes getting from a to b a pleasure. Unfortunately this may have to be my last diesel, a shame because it is perfect for this car.

Had several reliability issues which Range Rover took 5 months to resolve, needing a replacement DPF. Poor service from manufacturer.
