Mazda 2 Hatchback Review 2022

The Mazda 2 Hatchback is a stylish supermini that adds even more competition to the market. It's best suited to urban driving, providing a compact and affordable experience that fits the bill for the hustle and bustle of city life.

Rivals to the Mazda 2 Hatchback include the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Polo, and SEAT Ibiza

Mazda 2 Pros:

  • Mild hybrid technology available
  • Eight-inch infotainment system comes as standard with a rotary controller
  • Excellent fuel economy of above 50mpg

Mazda 2 Cons:

  • Higher than usual dashboard
  • Small interior and boot
  • Less fun to drive than its rivals

Our Mazda 2 Hatchback review covers:

Mazda 2 Hatchback Key Features:

  • Compact city hatchback with new headlights and a mesh grille
  • Touchscreen infotainment system and good comfort for those sitting in the front
  • 280-litre boot space which can be extended to 950 litres with the seats down 60:40
  • Two petrol engines available, with one featuring mild hybrid technology
  • Four trim levels available: SE-L, Sport, GT Sport, and the GT Sport Tech

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The exterior of the Mazda 2 Hatchback hasn't changed much since its predecessor. However, they've added a new mesh grille, an amended rear bumper and new headlights.

Mazda 2 Hatchback exterior

Even with the Mazda 2 being a compact hatchback, there's still a decent amount of room throughout. In the front, there's enough head and leg room for those around six foot; however, less can be said for those in the back, where space decreases.

The Mazda 2 has 280 litres of boot space, but if you fold the rear seats down, it extends to 950 litres. This will be enough for some light luggage and a weekly shop, but don't expect it to hold much more. This ranks low compared to its rivals, with the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo exceeding the Mazda 2.

Interior and Trims

The Mazda 2 Hatchback’s interior is what you'd expect from a compact hatchback, a simple layout with a few premium materials used. Both seats in the front are adjustable, and there's a leather-wrapped steering wheel and soft-touch materials on the dashboard.

An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes as standard, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allowing you to sync your smartphone easily. The touchscreen is a bit higher than other hatchbacks, but there is a useful rotary controller next to the handbrake.

Four trims are available for the Mazda 2 Hatchback, including the SE-L, Sport, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech.

The entry-level SE-L comes with 15-inch silver alloys, cruise control, an eight-inch touchscreen with three years of free map updates, six-speaker radio, and electric windows.

The Sport trim comes with 16-inch bright alloys, blue cloth trim, privacy glass, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry, and a chrome exhaust tip.

GT Sport comes with 16-inch alloys, black Granlux inserts and heated front seats, colour active driving display, parking aid, and a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The top-of-the-range GT Sport Tech has 16-inch alloys, blind spot monitoring, 360-view parking aid, front and rear parking sensors, and smart brake support.

Power and Performance

Two 1.5-litre petrol engines are available for the Mazda 2 Hatchback, the e-Skyactiv G and the Skyactiv-G. The former is a mild hybrid unit and is only available on the 90PS and 115PS manual models. The top-of-the-range 115ps manual has a top speed of 124mph and can achieve 0-62mph in 9.1 seconds.

The Skyactiv-G is only on the 75PS manual and 90PS automatic. The manual model can reach a top speed of 106mph and achieves 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds.

Mazda 2 Hatchback interior

The most impressive thing about the Mazda 2 Hatchback is its fuel economy. All models sit above a combined 50mpg, with the e-Skyactiv G 90PS proving the most efficient with a combined 60.1mpg. This exceeds rivals like the SEAT Ibiza and the VW Polo.

The Mazda 2 is designed for city driving, and you can see this on the road. It could be better over potholes, but the steering is weighted excellently regardless of your speed, making the tight turns in town a bit less stressful.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Mazda 2 Hatchback start from £17,525.00 OTR* or to lease from £152.39 per month.

Want to lease the Mazda 2 Hatchback? Nationwide Vehicle Contracts has a range of leasing deals available, which include the full manufacturer's warranty, road tax and breakdown recovery.

Car is generally fine and the fuel consumption is amazing. But the engine performance is very poor to achieve this.

The vehicle lacks power, the Peugeot 1.2 I had previously was much better. Very disappointed with the Mazda. It’s looks okay but that’s where it ends.

We could benefit with a bigger since having our first grandchild but when leased didn't take this into consideration.
