Mercedes-Benz B-Class Review 2022

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a classy five-door MPV vehicle. If you want a family car but don't want to go down the SUV route, the B-Class would be a good alternative, thanks to its modern technology, practical interior, and a smooth and comfortable drive.

Rivals to the Mercedes-Benz B-Class include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, Volkswagen Golf Estate, and the seven-seater Volkswagen Touran.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Pros:

  • Premium interior
  • Economical engines
  • Good boot space and practicality

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Cons:

  • No electric or PHEV option
  • Expensive compared to rivals
  • Automatic gearbox only

Our Mercedes-Benz B-Class review covers:

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Key Features:

  • Slick exterior with high roof
  • Premium interior with up-to-date technology
  • 455-litre boot with low load lip
  • Two engines available, one petrol and one diesel
  • Four trim levels available: Sport Executive, AMG Line Executive, AMG Line Premium, and AMG Line Premium Night Edition

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The exterior of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class is like a stretched version of the A-Class so it looks pretty smart. It has a sporty exterior featuring a redesigned front end, an aero spoiler on the side of the rear window, and a new grille which compliments the iconic Mercedes-Benz badge.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class exterior

The B-Class is tall with a high-roofed interior, so head and leg room are generous throughout. It even accommodates those in the back, with plenty of room for two six-foot adults. The B-Class features your typical cupholders, door bins, and a large cubby in the centre armrest.

Boot space for the B-Class comes in at 455 litres, which can be extended to 1530 litres with the rear seats folded down. It also features a low load lip, which helps when loading heavier or bulkier items. This is competitive with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, but way behind the VW Golf Estate.

Interior and Trims

Cabin comfort is one of the stand-out features of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Premium materials are used in abundance, there are loads of soft-touch materials, and the upholstery is superb. This competes well with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer; however, its rival feels better put together.

The B-Class comes standard with two digital displays, a seven-inch driver display and a 10.3-inch infotainment system. It features navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and voice control which responds when you say 'Hey Mercedes'.

Four trims are available for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, including Sport Executive, AMG Line Executive, AMG Line Premium, and AMG Line Premium Plus Night Edition.

The entry-level Sport Executive model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, a keyless-go starting function, active brake assist, and a parking camera package.

The AMG Line Executive adds to this with 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, an exclusive diamond radiator grille, sports seats, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and media display, and ambient lighting with 64 colours.

The AMG Line Premium comes with keyless entry, pre-installation for trailer coupling, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, illuminated front door sills, and Mercedes-Benz lettering ambient lighting.

The top-of-the-range AMG Line Premium Plus Night Edition features 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, multibeam LED headlamps with adaptive highbeam assist, a panoramic glass sunroof, and traffic sign assist.

Power and Performance

Two automatic engines are available for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, the diesel B 220d and the petrol B 200. The diesel unit has an eight-speed automatic gearbox, can achieve 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 136mph. The petrol version has a seven-speed automatic gearbox, reaches 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 139mph.

Fuel economy is good for both engines, but the diesel unit returns better figures. It achieves a combined 52.3-55.4mpg, compared to the petrol's 42.8-46.3mpg.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class interior

Even with the B-Class's size, it's a good drive on the roads. It handles well on country roads and provides good comfort over potholes and bumps. The B-Class won't let you down if you're on a long journey or driving around town.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class start from £32,685.00 OTR* or to lease from Price On Request per month.

The miles per gallon isn’t very good and forever filling up with petrol. No automatic folding windows which is disappointing on a car like this. The service has come up, and the car has only done 4K miles, not sure how to switch it off on the computer? And because it’s leased some of the functions are not compatible as if you had purchased the car, ie on the dashboard it says ring for a service by pressing the yes button, it doesn’t ring through to Mercedes.

I personally do not like the shape of the vehicle and the sat nav screen looks like it was an after thought, looks out of place and the technology employed is not at the same standard as less expensive vehicles.

Comfy and spacious but v little in the way of oomph and feels sluggish when pulling away or trying to accelerate. Really should have got a sunroof, didn’t realise it didn’t have one.
