Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Review 2023

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is a sleek and stylish luxury coupe. A good choice for small families who want to ride in style, the E-Class Coupe has a refined interior, plenty of tech, and good ride quality.

Rivals to the E-Class Coupe include the Audi A5 Coupe, Jaguar F-Type Coupe, and BMW 4 Series Coupe.

Our Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe review covers:

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Key Features

  • Sporty exterior design with flowing roofline
  • Premium and excellently designed interior
  • 425-litre boot
  • Two petrol and three diesel engines are available
  • Two trim levels: AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Luxurious interior
  • Enough room for four passengers
  • Beautiful exterior design

Cons:

  • Not quite as exciting on the road as the styling suggests
  • Expensive extras
  • Infotainment can be fiddly to use

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The E-Class Coupe is a large two-door coupe that provides a slightly sleeker alternative to the E-Class Saloon. Its exterior includes a nice front grille featuring a large Mercedes badge, a flowing roofline, 19 or 20-inch alloy wheels, and small rear windows.

Get inside the E-Class Coupe, and you'll find enough room for four passengers. Those in the front have plenty of leg and headroom, and the two passengers in the rear should be able to get comfortable for a long journey. Its practicality is one of the best for a two-door coupe and is better than the Audi A5 Coupe and BMW 4 Series Coupe

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe exterior

Boot space comes in at 425 litres, which can be extended with the rear seats split 40/20/40. The boot opening is quite narrow, making it tricky to load bigger items, but this is countered by a flat and wide boot floor.

Interior and Trims

If you're getting a Mercedes coupe, you'd expect it to have a classy interior, and the E-Class Coupe lives up to this. Get behind the wheel, and you're surrounded by premium materials such as a leather steering wheel, a wooden trim on the dash, and LED ambient lighting.

On the dashboard, there's a pair of 12.3-inch display screens. The central screen houses the infotainment system, while the one behind the steering wheel covers the digital instrument display. The infotainment system has a DAB radio, voice control, and smartphone connectivity, but sat-nav has to be added extra.

You can control the infotainment system through a touchpad on the central divide. It means you can use the system without reaching forward, which is handy, and it also comes with haptic feedback and recognises your handwriting. However, it can be tricky to use sometimes and certainly takes some getting used to.

Two trims are available for the E-Class Coupe: AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus.

AMG Line Premium has 19-inch five-twin-spoke grey alloy wheels, LED high-performance headlamps, keyless go/entry, privacy glass for rear side windows, heated front seats, a leather steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, a black interior trim, and a parking package with a 360-degree camera.

AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus adds 20-inch multi-spoke black alloy wheels, a diamond radiator grille, a panoramic electric glass sunroof, a grey open-pore ash wood interior trim, a memory package for the front seats and four-way lumbar support, and a Burmester surround sound system with 13 speakers.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, you can choose between two petrol engines with mild-hybrid technology and three diesel engines. All are turbocharged and come fitted with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The entry-level four-cylinder units are the petrol E 300 and the diesel E220 d and E 300 d 4MATIC. These three will be good enough for most, returning decent performance and fuel economy.

The petrol engine uses mild-hybrid tech to return a power output of 258hp and 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds, while the E 220 d has 194hp and does 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds. Go for the more powerful E 300 d 4MATIC, which has four-wheel drive and power increases to 256hp.

The main advantage of the entry-level E 220d is that it's the most economical engine available, coming with an economy of 48mpg.

The last two engines come with six cylinders and four-wheel drive. The petrol unit is the most powerful available, coming with an output of 367hp and achieving 0-62mph in five seconds. The diesel returns slightly worse performance but increases economy from 32mpg to 40mpg.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe interior

Although a sporty coupe, the E-Class Coupe is more oriented towards comfort and refinement when on the road.

Its steering is pretty good regardless of what speed you're going. It offers plenty of feedback through the wheel, meaning you can precisely place the E-Class Coupe. Select 'Sport' mode, and the E-Class becomes quite agile, allowing for a bit of fun on country roads.

Suspension also varies depending on what mode you're driving in. 'Sport' firms up the suspension, but if you're going for a leisurely cruise, select 'Comfort', and it's softened and deals with bumps in the road well.

We had well documented issues with this car. The body work was damaged when it was delivered. It has been into the dealership three times for electronic failures. Very poor

George Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe E220d 4Matic AMG Line Premium 9G-Tronic

For a coupe has a good large boot which fits my daughters wheelchair easily, the rear space had two full size seats with the middle which would normally be a small seat is instead a good size area with a drinks holder and space for her play stuff and other bits. The seats automatically move forward to allow easy access to the rear seats.

I am very happy with the car. No problems with it at all. The only gripe i have is with the main dealer servicing. Three years ago an A service for a MB diesel was around £200 . It is now £386. A near 100% increase.
