Mercedes GLC Coupe Review 2022

The Mercedes GLC Coupe is a sporty variant of the mid-sized Mercedes GLC SUV. It is an excellent option if you're looking for a premium family car with a modern luxury interior and a large boot.

Rivals to the Mercedes GLC Coupe include the BMW X4, Porsche Macan, Audi Q5 and Jaguar F-Pace.

Our Mercedes GLC Coupe review covers:

Mercedes GLC Coupe Key Features

  • Upmarket exterior style with sporty low-slung sloping roof
  • Modern interior with high-quality materials and soft-touch plastics
  • 500-litre boot, which expands to 1,400 litres with rear seats down
  • Wide range of engines with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants
  • Three trim levels, including AMG Line, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The Mercedes GLC Coupe combines the practicality and raised driving position of an SUV with the sporty styling of a low-slung coupe. Similar in style to the BMW X4 and the Porsche Macan, the Mercedes GLC Coupe's sloping roof gives a sportier presence than your average upmarket SUV. The latest generation model also boasts new tailpipe trims and LED high-performance headlamps with a sophisticated light design which help the GLC Coupe stand out on the road.

Inside, the GLC Coupe's modern interior offers a spacious cabin up front with plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustment to get comfy. There's a decent amount of head and legroom inside. However, as expected of a coupe SUV, there's not as much room as the standard Mercedes GLC Estate and passengers over six-foot-tall may struggle for headroom. The small rear windows also make space feel quite tight in the back.

At the rear, the GLC Coupe's boot can hold 500-litres, expanding to 1,400 litres with the rear seats down. As a result, the load space is long and wide, but not very deep, with rivals such as the Porsche Macan offering a more practical load space.

Interior and Trims

Inside the cabin, the GLC Coupe's interior looks and feels a high end, with luxurious, high-quality materials used throughout, such as neatly brushed metal trims, soft and supple leatherette and plenty of posh soft-touch plastics. Unfortunately, you don't get the dual-screen infotainment system you can get in most new Mercedes'. Instead, the GLC Coupe gets conventional analogue dials and a separate free-standing display.

The Mercedes GLC Coupe comes in three trim levels, including the AMG Line, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus.

The entry-level AMG Line model comes with AMG body styling, an AMG diffuser look rear apron, a MBUX multimedia system and Thermotronic automatic climate control. It also comes with a 3-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel, Artico leather seats, diamond radiator grille and 19-inch 5-twin spoke titanium grey alloy wheels.

The mid-spec AMG Line Premium models have a 12.3-inch digital driver's display, an upgraded infotainment system with smartphone mirroring for Apple and Android phones, and a wireless phone charging pad. You also get extended side running boards along with sportier AMG Line bumpers, aluminium pedal trims, a black fabric roof lining, AMG sports seats, 64-colour ambient lighting, and 20-inch multi-spoke light-alloy wheels.

The top-of-the-range AMG Line Premium Plus models add AMG sports seats with memory functions, Keyless-go, a parking package with 360-degree camera, a sliding glass sunroof and 20-inch five twin-spoke light-alloy wheels.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, the Mercedes GLC Coupe features the same engine range as the standard GLC, including the 220d 4MATIC and 300d 4MATIC diesels and the mild-hybrid 300 4MATIC petrol and the 300e 4MATIC and 300 de 4MATIC plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

The same 1950cc four-cylinder diesel powers the 220d and 300d, and the 300de 4MATIC PHEV, aided by a powerful electric motor.

The four-cylinder petrol engine in the 300 4MATIC and the 30e 4MATIC PHEV are shared, as is the electric motor in the latter. The 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission is standard on all of the above models.

Out on the road, the Mercedes GLC Coupe is great to drive. Compared to a standard GLC, the ride height is slightly lower, meaning it's not as capable off-road, however, its lower, sportier seating position makes for a sportier drive.

Every GLC Coupe comes with retuned sports suspension as standard, including Mercedes' Dynamic Select system with adaptive dampers and selectable driving modes, which help the overall driving experience.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Mercedes GLC Coupe start from £49,520.00 OTR* or to lease from Price On Request per month.

I really like this vehicle. My only preference would be for a higher spec model but that is being picky on my part and I had that choice.

Nicolas Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe GLC 300d 4Matic AMG Line Premium 9G-Tronic *Incl. Metallic Paint*

Really enjoy the looks, high spec features as standard on AMG Premium, tons of power from 300d, quietness, solidity. It is eating tyres on the standard fit 20" wheel - 50% worn in just 5000 miles of slow town driving is terrible. My BMW new in 2016 330d (3L vs the Merc's 2L engine) used no more fuel than the Merc, which is disappointing.
