MG HS Review 2021

The MG HS is a practical five-door family car with an impressive amount of space and comfort. This large SUV undercuts even smaller rivals on price, cementing MG's reputation for good value.

It is a popular lease alternative to family SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar, Skoda Karoq, Ford Kuga and Peugeot 5008.

Our MG HS Review covers:

MG HS Key Features

  • Sporty exterior style with chrome grille and broad headlights
  • Comfortable, high-quality interior with 10.1-inch colour touchscreen
  • 463-litre boot, which expands to 1,454 litres with the rear seats down
  • Petrol engine available, including a plug-in hybrid variant
  • Two trim levels available, including Excite and Exclusive

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The HS is the largest SUV in MG's line-up. From a distance, it's hard to tell the HS apart from many of its rivals but look closer, and you'll see sporty touches like its chrome grille, broad headlights, wide rear lights, dual exhausts and silver skid-plate style rear bumper, all of which make it stand out from rivals like the Renault Kadjar

MG HS exterior

Inside, the MG HS has a family-friendly interior with soft-touch materials used throughout. Passenger legroom and headroom is more than generous, with enough room for three adults to sit across the back in reasonable comfort.

As for luggage space, the HS's boot can hold up to 463 litres, which is bigger than the Nissan Qashqai but not as impressive as the Skoda Karoq's 521 litres. The rear passenger seats also fold to a 60/40 split, bringing an extra 1,454 litres of luggage space when folded flat. However, luggage space is slightly less for plug-in hybrid models, as extra room is needed to house the battery and electric motor.

Interior and Trims

The latest HS has received significant improvements to its interior compared to the previous model. Older hard plastics have been replaced, and there's a more modern look with soft-touch materials used throughout. All HS models now get a 10.1-inch colour touchscreen, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.

The previous entry-level Explore spec has been scrapped in terms of trim levels, with just the Excite or Exclusive variants on offer.

Excite models have 18-inch wheels, a touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav, faux-leather seats, air conditioning, a rear-view camera, automatic headlights, front and rear electric windows.

Top-spec Exclusive models add heated electric leather seats, a panoramic glass roof, 2-zone air conditioning, LED headlights and a six-speaker stereo.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, just one 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is on offer providing 160bhp and 250Nm of torque but isn't particularly nippy or economical. This engine is available with a six-speed manual or optional seven-speed automatic gearbox.

MG also offers a 254bhp plug-in hybrid version, which is more expensive but improves overall running costs. The PHEV combines power from its 1.5-litre petrol unit with a 120bhp boost from its electric motor, providing impressive acceleration.

Out on the road, the MG HS is great to drive, dealing well with bumpy UK roads thanks to its multi-link suspension set-up at the rear. However, the HS falls down on overall body control at higher speeds, with rivals such as the Skoda Karoq feeling more agile.

That said, the HS is comfortable to ride and drive, making it an excellent family car leasing option.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new MG HS start from £22,448.50 OTR* or to lease from Price On Request per month.

When I leased the vehicle it said it came with DAB which it didn't, the air conditioning unit broke within 8 months and there are no front parking sensors. If there was a way to get out of this lease deal and change cars I would.
