Skoda Superb Review 2022

If you're looking for a large family car with a premium feel, practical interior, and an enormous boot, look no further than the Skoda Superb.

Winner of the Auto Express Family Car of the Year award in 2020, the Skoda Superb is an impressive all-rounder, making it a popular alternative to rivals such as the Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.

Our Skoda Superb review covers:

Skoda Superb Key Features

  • Refreshed exterior style with new grille, headlights, and alloy wheel design
  • Slick interior design with eight-inch infotainment system as standard
  • 625-litre boot, expanding to 1,760 litres with 60/40 split rear seats folded
  • Mix of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines for power and efficiency
  • Five trim levels, including SE, SE Technology, SE L trim, SportLine Plus and Laurin & Klement

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

Facelifted in 2019, the latest generation Skoda Superb boasts new front and rear bumpers, a new grille, new headlights, and new alloy wheel designs to bring it up to date in the competitive large family saloon market.

Inside, there's more room up front than the Audi A4 Saloon and Mercedes C-Class Saloon, with plenty of head and legroom for driver and passengers.

The interior is wider than average, allowing three adults to sit in the back with space to spare. Thanks to its wide-opening doors and low sills, getting in and out is also easy.

As expected from a Skoda, there's lots of storage options inside, including a large, air-conditioned glovebox, large door bins, a hinged cubby below the steering wheel and a sunglasses holder by the rear-view mirror.

Boot space is generous, too, with room for ten carry-on suitcases or a couple of bikes with the rear seats folded.

At 625 litres, it is larger than the VW Passat (586 litres), and the Ford Mondeo (525 litres) and the wide-opening tailgate makes it easier to load bulky items. The rear seats split in 60/40 configuration, increasing the space to 1,760 litres. A fold-flat front seat is also available with certain trim levels.

The only exception is the plug-in hybrid version which has a reduced boot size of 485 litres due to the under-floor batteries.

Interior and Trims

Step inside the Superb's interior features a slick design with soft-touch materials, chrome trims and high-grade materials. Its thoughtfully laid-out dashboard boasts a premium feel, with impressive attention to detail and a wide range of seat and steering adjustments to make it easy to find the perfect driving position. Only the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series can beat it for quality.

All models come with an eight-inch infotainment system with DAB radio and Bluetooth as standard, with pin-sharp graphics and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on higher-spec models.

Five trim levels are available, including the SE, SE Technology, SE L trim, SportLine Plus and Laurin & Klement.

The entry-level SE trim comes well equipped with cruise control, power-folding door mirrors, manual air conditioning and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The SE Technology model adds a built-in sat-nav, leather upholstery, heated front seats, privacy glass and adaptive cruise control.

The SE L trim remains the favourite thanks to an electrically operated tailgate, matrix LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels, extra safety kit and sat-nav with wi-fi capability, plus several other upgrades.

Sportline Plus models improve on the standard kit while adding a sportier character to the exterior and interior. Laurin & Klement models add leather interior, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), adaptive suspension and a larger, 9.2-inch touchscreen with 3D maps and enhanced connectivity.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, the Skoda Superb offers a mix of petrol and diesel engines and a plug-in hybrid model for both power and efficiency.

Three petrol engines are available, including the 1.5 TSI for 150hp or a powerful 2.0 TSI with 200hp or 280hp. The latter comes with a DSG gearbox and four-wheel drive.

The diesel range incorporates a 2.0-litre unit with three different power outputs: 122hp, 150hp or 200hp. Depending on specification, these come with a manual or DSG transmission, plus four-wheel drive on SE L trims and above.

A plug-in hybrid model is also available, combining a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with a 113bhp electric motor for a combined 215bhp.

Out on the road, the Superb accurate and light steering make it easy to drive in town, despite its large size. But it is at higher speeds where the Superb comes into its own. Refinement is noticeably better than its predecessor, and its quiet range of engine makes for a relaxing drive.

Set up for comfort rather than agility, the trade-off is more direct on twisting country routes. The Superb leans through corners noticeably, and driver engagement isn't as good as sportier rivals such as the 3 Series and Jaguar XE

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Skoda Superb start from £27,410.00 OTR* or to lease from £290.80 per month.

Thinking of leasing the new Skoda Superb? Car leasing may be a cheaper alternative to buying outright with a bank loan or dealer finance thanks to fixed monthly rentals, a low initial outlay and flexible contract terms.

All Superb lease deals with Nationwide Vehicle Contracts include road tax, breakdown cover, the full manufacturer's warranty, and free delivery direct to your door (exclusions apply) to help you save even more money.

*'On the road' price is correct at time of publication and includes one year's road fund license, DVLA first registration fee and number plate fee. Prices are subject to change. Always check with your nearest retailer.

It is a large comfortable car, but most importantly the boot takes 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 electric golf trolleys and a suitcase, this is our priority and very few cars meet our requirement without the contents being on view.
