Used Car Leasing

Used car leasing provides the opportunity to drive an affordable used vehicle without the expense or hassle of ownership. It is a long-term rental agreement in which you pay a low initial rental, followed by fixed monthly rentals for a period of two, three or four years. At the end of the contract, you hand the vehicle back to the finance provider. 

Used car leasing works in exactly the same way as new car personal leasing. The main difference is your car will be a used vehicle instead of brand-new. As such, you can benefit from lower monthly rentals and quick delivery in as little as 14 days. 

All of our used car leasing contracts include the following:

• Free GB mainland delivery*
• Minimum six-months MOT
• Minimum six-months breakdown cover
• Road tax for the duration of the contract

*For some locations in Scotland, the Scottish Highlands and Scottish Islands such as Dundee (DD), Inverness (IV), Aberdeen (AB), Perth (PH), Oban (PA), Greenock (PA) Stranraer (DG) and Skye (IV) a delivery charge of up £450 may be applicable depending on distance and supplying vehicle manufacturer. The following features are not included in your contract: 

• Vehicle insurance
• Maintenance, Servicing & MOT (packages available)
• Extended warranty and breakdown (packages available)

All our used car lease vehicles are ex-lease cars sourced exclusively from industry-leading vehicle funders. 

When a new car leasing contract ends, the vehicles are returned to the finance provider, who then makes them available for re-lease as used cars. Since modern vehicles are built to last and often remain in excellent condition after their lease is over, ex-lease cars are an excellent option for those looking to lease a used vehicle.

The mileage of our used car leases can vary depending on their age and where the vehicle is sourced from. You will be advised of the mileage of the vehicle at the point of order. Any mileage already on the vehicle prior to handover will not count towards your annual mileage allowance.  

All the vehicles on our used lease cars deals are inspected, safety checked, valeted and refurbished (where necessary) to meet minimum car quality standards. 

Our minimum quality standards include:

• The tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 3mm
• If a service is required prior to delivery, this will be completed on the vehicle
• All vehicles must have a minimum of six months of MOT
• We conduct safety checks and perform valeting to ensure cleanliness

Please note, while all our used lease cars are checked in line with BVRLA standards, you may see visible signs of wear and tear across the bodywork and wheels, in line with the age and mileage of the car. Each vehicle is priced accordingly, and its condition is taken into account. 

If you’re interested in one of our used car leasing deals, a sales consultant will be happy to send across images of the used vehicle prior to order. These images detail the exterior and interior condition of the vehicle. You will also be able to inspect the vehicle on the day of delivery, prior to signing the delivery note. 

You will not be able to view the second-hand car you are leasing in person prior to delivery as Nationwide Vehicle Contracts do not hold the stock cars. All of our used vehicles are held by the finance provider at a compound that is not open to the general public. 

You can purchase an extended warranty policy at point of order to help cover any unexpected repair costs with an unlimited number of claims and a maximum claim liability up to the value of the vehicle. You can read more on our Extended Car Warranty page.

Depending on a used vehicle's age and mileage, the remaining balance of the standard manufacturer’s warranty may still be applicable. However, since the finance provider can't electronically track the vehicle's service history, we cannot guarantee the warranty's status.

You may be able to check if the manufacturer's warranty is still valid by contacting the manufacturer directly and providing your VIN number (usually inside the driver's side door or in the lower right corner of the windshield) and the current mileage reading. Some manufacturers offer online portals with service dates, warranty, and recall information specific to your vehicle. Please note, Nationwide Vehicle Contracts cannot access this information for you.

All our used car lease vehicles come with a minimum six-month MOT, after which you are responsible for all servicing and MOT costs for the vehicle throughout the duration of your contract in line with UK law and the manufacturer’s schedule.  

To help you manage these costs effectively, we offer two options with used car leasing:

1. Used Car Service Plan: This plan provides a fixed monthly cost to cover your vehicle's servicing needs.
2. Vehicle Maintenance: Our comprehensive vehicle maintenance package includes scheduled servicing, repairs, and additional benefits.

It's important to note that once your leased vehicle reaches three years of age, you are required to take it for an MOT, regardless of the maintenance package you have selected.

Road Fund Licence (otherwise known as road tax or Vehicle Excise Duty) is included for the duration of the contract. For more information, check our handy Taxing a Lease Vehicle guide.

All our used lease cars will include a minimum six months of roadside assistance, starting from the day of delivery. Assistance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the United Kingdom.  

At the end of the inclusive breakdown period, you will be liable for any breakdown costs, unless a breakdown assist policy is purchased as part of the contract. Find out more on our Car Breakdown Cover page.  

All of our used car leasing deals are in stock and are available for delivery in as little as 14 days. Please note, we are unable to deliver a vehicle until we are in receipt of your signed finance agreement, processing fee and a copy of your proof of insurance. Your new vehicle will be driven to your home address, provided your address is situated on the GB mainland.

Where possible, we try to arrange delivery at a time and date that is convenient for you. Deliveries generally take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 5.30pm.

If you exceed your annual mileage allowance, you will be charged a fixed amount for each extra mile. This amount can be found in your finance agreement.

At the end of your lease contract, you are responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is fully legal and roadworthy when returned. 

You must return the vehicle with no more than normal wear and tear, and photos will be taken before delivery and at collection. Any damage or missing items caused during the lease period will be charged, and you should get any damage fixed by a reputable specialist before returning the vehicle.

If you need to return your vehicle before the end of your contract, you will be subject to the usual early termination policy and charges.
