What is covered by the car breakdown policy?

DriverFirst Assist provides the following services:

Roadside Assistance - Roadside repair or recovery to the nearest garage, your home address or original destination.
Home Assist - Repair or recovery to the nearest garage from your home address.
Caravans and Trailers - Recovery for your caravan/trailer if it is fitted with a standard towing hitch and isn't bigger than 23 feet in length.
Accident Cover - Transportation of your vehicle to a nominated local address if your vehicle is involved in an accident rendering it immobile or illegal to drive.
Puncture Cover - Assistance with punctures, provided if your vehicle is carrying a serviceable spare wheel or inflation kit.
Battery-range anxiety (full electric vehicles only) - Transportation for your vehicle, you and any passengers to the nearest charge point, home address or planned destination if your electric vehicle runs out of charge. (Limited to two call-outs per year)
Lack of fuel (non-electric vehicles) - Transportation for your vehicle, you and any passengers to the nearest fuel refilling station, your home address or planned destination if your non-electric vehicle runs out of fuel. (Limited to two call-outs per year)

What is excluded on car breakdown policy?

DriverFirst Assist excludes the following services:

The cost of any parts, components or materials used to repair the vehicle
Any cost or expenses not authorised by one of the Rescue Controllers
Any service or insurance cover where action has not been taken following a previous breakdown
Overloading of the vehicle or carrying more passengers than it is designed to carry
The cost of alternative transport, overnight accommodation, or car hire charges
Any caravan or trailer where the total length is more than 23 feet

Frequently asked questions regarding breakdown cover

If leasing a car through Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, your DriverFirst Assist breakdown cover is provided by Car Care Plan, one of the UK’s leading providers of award-winning vehicle warranty and asset protection products.

Cover may vary depending on the manufacturer. If your used car is relatively new, your manufacturer's roadside assist cover may still apply. This would be worth checking when taking out your used car lease.

If your used car doesn't have any current breakdown cover, Nationwide Vehicle Contracts offer six months of free cover on all used cars leased through us.

To make a claim, you'll need to call DriverFirst Assist at 0344 573 9176.

You will need to tell the controller that you're a DriverFirst customer, your policy number, vehicle registration number, where your vehicle is and what seems to be the problem.

If you intend to claim under your extended car warranty, you must call Car Care Plan and get authorisation before any repairs are started.

If you want to cancel your cover, you can call Car Care Plan on 0344 573 8000.

You can cancel your coverage free of charge within 30 days of buying it, and you will be eligible for a full refund.

If you cancel your policy after these 30 days, you'll have to pay a cancellation fee of £20 but will still be eligible for a refund.

The coverage has a limit of six call-outs per year and the maximum amount you can claim in a year is £2,500.

Also, it doesn't cover vehicles that are:

In excess of 3.5 tonnes; more than 17 feet long, 6 feet 3 inches wide and 8 feet high
Used for motor racing, rallies, public hire, private hire or any contest or speed trials

You are covered throughout the United Kingdom, which includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The driver must keep the car in a roadworthy condition, including maintenance or proper oil and water levels.

Also, if the car breaks down, the driver must remain with or nearby the vehicle until help arrives.

Breakdown cover can save you time, effort, and money in the long term. Without breakdown cover, you'd have to pay for a mechanic to get to the scene, try and fix the car, or for a tow to a garage. This could end up being very expensive.

Yes, if you choose to add breakdown cover to your used car lease, the cover will begin as soon as your lease starts.
