What condition will a used car lease be in?
Guide overview:
- Every used car is inspected, safety-checked, and valeted to meet strict BVRLA standards.
- All used cars are under five years old and have no more than 50,000 miles on the clock.
- You'll get at least six months' MOT and roadside assistance as standard.
- If a used lease car fails to meet inspection or BVRLA standards, it will not be offered as a leasing option.
Getting behind the wheel of a used lease car is a smart way to keep costs down without compromising on peace of mind. But naturally, you’ll want to know exactly what kind of condition the car will be in before you commit.
This guide walks you through the checks we carry out, what you can expect inside and out, and how delivery works, so you can make an informed decision with confidence. Whether you’re already browsing our used car leasing options or checking our latest used lease deals, this page gives you the full picture.

- Why lease a used car with Nationwide Vehicle Contracts?
Yes. Before a used lease car reaches you, it undergoes a thorough inspection to make sure it’s safe, roadworthy, and meets the standards set by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA). This includes key checks on the exterior, interior, mechanical components, tyres, fluid levels, electrics, and bodywork.
Because they are used vehicles, you may notice light signs of day-to-day use, things like very small marks or slight wear inside the cabin, but nothing that affects safety or normal driving.
We also ensure the used lease car meets our minimum quality standards, including:
- All tyres are safe and meet the UK’s MOT specification.
- If a service is required, it will be completed prior to delivery (only if it's needed within the next six months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first).
- Minimum of six months of MOT.
- Safety checks and valeting to ensure cleanliness.
Used lease cars shouldn’t feel neglected or worn out. Here’s what you can expect when yours arrives:
- Major chips or noticeable scratches are repaired.
- Lights work correctly and meet MOT standards.
- The windscreen is clean, safe, and free from major damage.
- There’s no rust or structural corrosion.
- Seats are clean, tidy, and free from heavy stains, rips, or burns.
- All interior fittings (handles, switches, trim panels) are secure and working.
- The dashboard and controls function correctly.
- The car is professionally cleaned inside and out before delivery.
The inspection is carried out by a qualified third-party specialist on behalf of your finance provider. This ensures the assessment is objective, consistent, and carried out to an industry standard, at no cost to you.
That means everything is checked before the car reaches your home, and you don't need to arrange anything yourself.
“Before delivery, each used lease car undergoes a thorough inspection, covering the paintwork, mechanical performance, interior condition, and engine.”

It’s completely normal to want to see a used car before making a decision.
While we can't offer in-person viewings (as we don't hold stock of the cars), we can share image packs of the exact car you're interested in. These will show the condition clearly, from interior shots to exterior angles, including any visible marks.
Please note: Nationwide Vehicle Contracts does not hold stock of the vehicles, so in-person viewings are not possible. The cars are stored at secure compounds that are not open to the general public.
When taking delivery of the car, you have the opportunity to inspect the vehicle on the day. If there are any issues, you can raise this with the driver prior to signing the delivery note.
Every used lease car comes with a minimum of six months' MOT and roadside assistance from the day your agreement starts.
