The Volvo V90 is an eye-catching estate version of the Volvo S90 saloon. It's classy, versatile with a minimalist cabin and packed with useful features, making it an excellent practical leasing option.
Rivals to the Volvo V90 include the BMW 5 Series Touring, Mercedes E-Class Estate and Audi A6 Avant.
Our Volvo V90 review covers:
The Volvo V90 has a striking design with its sharp nose and sweeping roofline, emphasising the V90’s classy style. It feels more of an upright estate car rear thanks to its muscular shoulder line, B-pillar back and steeply raked tailgate, which boosts the car's kerb appeal rather than practicality.
Inside the cabin, there's a decent amount of room in the rear for passengers, although the middle seat is pretty slim and doesn't offer as much lateral support as the other seats. Head and legroom are also reasonable inside the V90, making it ideal for tall passengers on longer journeys.
At the rear, the V90 has a 551-litre boot which expands to 1,517 litres with the rear seats folded. Compared to its rivals, the BMW 5 Series Touring’s boot extends to 1,620 litres when the seats are folded down, and if you are after even more room, the Mercedes E-Class Estate can manage an impressive 1,820 litres.
The Volvo XC90 influences the inside of the V90's luxurious interior with soft leather and natural wood used throughout. However, the inside looks very different compared to its rivals. For example, instead of a widescreen infotainment system stuck on top of the dashboard, the V90 has a slick portrait system nestled neatly between two vertical air vents.
A nine-inch portrait infotainment system with integrated satellite navigation and an eight-inch screen that takes the place of conventional analogue dials is standard on all V90 models. Both screens are easy to read, and the menus are logically laid out and respond quickly. Plus, the dashboard doesn't feel cluttered with buttons and knobs and has plenty of posh cold-to-the-touch metal trims and soft plastics.
Three trim levels are available, including Core, Plus and Ultimate.
The entry-level Core trim has impressive features, from elegant leather seats to the handy reverse parking camera with front and rear sensors. It also comes with stylish aluminium details inside and 18-inch diamond cut alloys.
The Plus trim adds a sportier front grille and 19-inch diamond cut alloys. It also adds a pilot assist for easy motorway miles, a 360-degree parking camera, and a special air purifier that removes nasty air pollutants.
The top of the range Ultimate trim gets 20-inch alloy wheels, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and a panoramic sunroof. It also gets a heads-up-display that's integrated into the windscreen.
Under the bonnet, the Volvo V90 offers a choice of two diesel engines, three petrols and a plug-in hybrid variant.
The diesel engine range consists of a 188hp D4 and 232hp D5, both of which come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D5 comes as standard with four-wheel drive while the D4 drives the front wheels.
The three petrol engines are a T4, T5 and T6 with 190, 250 and 310hp. The petrol options are much smoother than the diesel but use more fuel.
The plug-in hybrid variant is a 390hp T8 petrol-electric hybrid engine which boasts huge performance, cheap running costs and the ability to move under electric power alone.
The Volvo V90 is perfect for motorway driving as it's capable and designed for long-distance cruising instead of nipping around town. However, it shares its underpinnings with the Volvo XC90 SUV, so it doesn't have a sporty ride like a BMW 5 Series Touring. Instead, the Volvo is similar and rivals the Mercedes E-Class Estate for comfort.
Prices for the new Volvo V90 start from £43,300.00 OTR* or to lease from Price On Request per month.
