Volvo XC60 Review 2021

Sitting between the XC40 and the XC90 in Volvo's SUV line-up, the XC60 is Volvo's best-selling model and a stylish alternative to the Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

Now in its second generation, the XC60 takes a more comfort-oriented approach than its rivals, offering a level of tech and quality that beats most of its competitors without compromising on space.

Our Volvo XC60 review covers:

Volvo XC60 Key Features

  • Striking exterior style with Thor hammer-style headlights
  • Flexible interior with 60/40 split-folding rear seats and 505-litre boot
  • Comfortable, stylish and understated interior with leather seats
  • Wide range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrids engines
  • Three equipment levels are available, including the Momentum, R-Design and Inscription

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

Based on the same platform as the seven-seater XC90, the XC60 looks like a scaled-down version of its older sibling with its Thor's hammer-style headlights, large grille, swept-back windscreen and distinctive hook-shaped rear lights.

The XC90's practicality is also brought across too, with interior space for the driver and up to four passengers, good knee, shoulder and headroom in the back and plenty of storage cubbies in the front. The 60/40 split-folding rear seats fold down completely flat but don't offer as much flexibility as other cars in its class with a 40/20/40 layout.

While the XC60's boot can't quite match the Jaguar F-Pace for size, it is by no means bad at a reasonable 505 litres. However, capacity is reduced in the plug-in hybrid T6 and T8 models, at 468 litres, because most electrics are under the boot floor.

Interior and Trims

Inside, the XC60 offers a comfortable, stylish and understated interior, with high-quality materials and liberal use of wood or metal trims, especially on high-spec Inscription models. Every model gets leather seats and a large nine-inch central touchscreen that controls most of the vehicle's functions.

Three equipment levels are available, including the Momentum, R-Design and Inscription. You can also upgrade the R-Design and Inscription models by opting for the Pro specification.

The entry-level Momentum trim comes packed with Bluetooth, sat-nav, cruise control, climate control and a powered tailgate.

The mid-spec R-Design adds a sportier theme with dual exhaust pipes, sports pedals, black headlining, sports suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The top-of-the-range Inscription and Inscription Pro trims add Nappa leather, 'Driftwood' inlays, chrome exterior trim, ambient lighting and a massage function for the front seats.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, there's a wide range of 2.0-litre engines available, all offering power and economy and an automatic gearbox as standard. The B4 and B5 diesels are the most popular, offering 194bhp or 232bhp with front or all-wheel drive, while the B5 and B6 petrol units are best for those who mainly drive around town.

There's also 335bhp T6 and 385bhp or 399bhp T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid engines, offering impressive performance and sizeable company car tax savings, making them ideal for business users.

No matter the engine, the XC60 offers a relaxing drive. The standard suspension fitted to most trim levels does a good job of dealing with speed bumps, and the optional air suspension (standard on Pro versions) adds a more composed and well-controlled ride.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Volvo XC60 start from £45,675.00 OTR* or to lease from £365.44 per month.

Thinking of leasing an XC60? Car leasing offers many benefits over buying, including fixed monthly rentals, a low initial rental and free mainland GB delivery. All vehicles supplied with Nationwide Vehicle Contracts also come from the manufacturer's franchised UK dealer network, meaning we can not only offer you a great price but the trust and reliability that comes from a main dealership.

*'On the road' price correct at time of publication and typically includes one year’s road fund license, DVLA first registration fee and number plate fee. Always check with the manufacturer.

Use it every day.. very comfortable for bigger people like me. Engine is quiet and pulls well and it has a few gadgets which I like… it looks fabulous when it’s clean. Difficult not to scrape the 22in alloys in 70s car parks!

Beautiful car, only thing lets it down is the charge, 21 miles doesn't last 2 minutes, fuel economy is better on a longer run, would 100% get another but in a diesel if still available, like it better than my Mercedes I had

The vehicle is obviously a luxury model however as hybrid i was under the impression the fuel economy would be much better than it actually is. On average I'm getting about 37.5mpg which is about 90mpg less than advertised, very misleading.

High level of trim and finish. I find the sat nav is a bit fiddly, but other than that, a really excellent & comfortable car

The software affects the performance of the car. It is not easy to understand and also, several times whilst drving the car has unnexpectedly stopped due these messages. Also you have to press the key down several times firmly and close to the vehicle to get the boot open. I also do not like the fact that I canno easily connect my phone to the car and listen to my own audio. By far, the most disappointing model I have had and I would never choose this again

Some of the safety features (Lane Control, Collision detection) are a bit too sensitive and actually become a distraction from regular driving. But they can be turned off which is fine, except when the day comes I actually need them!

The petrol engine performs nowhere near the advertised MPG statistics. I’m a careful driver but I’m still struggling to get 30 MPG and I do a lot of long journeys.
