drive-thrus
As much as we love all things car, there's one thing even our car leasing deals are missing: a built-in kitchen. That's why drive-thrus are such a key part of the UK's road network. While the often nearby petrol station fuels our vehicles, drive-thrus fuel us, with burgers, fries, chicken, pizza and more all designed to be eaten quickly so we can get on with our journey.
However, it's safe to say not all of them are as tasty. Everyone has their favourite, and many of us likely have ones we're keen on avoiding. So we've created the 'drive-thru index' to rank the best and worst drive-thrus across 50 locations in the UK to help you when you're planning your next trip.

How it all works
To find the UK's ultimate food pitstop, we focused on six popular fast-food and coffee chains and analysed over 580 individual drive-thrus. Each location was scored on a number of metrics, including the number of drive-thrus per capita, Google reviews and Google search demand per capita. These factors were then ranked to give a total 'drive-thru score' out of 100, helping you to enjoy a more delicious drive in the future.
For McDonald's fans, Norwich is the place to go. The Thickthorn drive-thru scores full-marks, achieving 100 out of 100 on our index - making it the best individual drive-thru out of all the UK cities studied. London comes in last place with the bottom five all being in the capital city. Sydenham McDonald's is the worst, scoring a mere 5.08 out of 100.
If it's KFC you fancy, you'll be hard pressed to find an out-and-out winner. The chain scores an average of 35.3 out of 100 on the drive-thru index. Northampton's Towcester Road just edges into top place, scoring 83.40 out of 100. On the other end of the scale, London's Romford fares far worse with a score of 1.93 out of 100.
In the mood for Burger King? Your best bet is Reading. Their Gateway drive-thru scored an index rating of 75.16 out of 100. Meanwhile, in London, the King's crown is a little tarnished with the five lowest scores. Tottenham Retail Park had the lowest overall score out of all the 580 drive-thrus scoring only 0.39 out of 100!
If you're heading to Starbucks, Warrington reigns supreme for your coffee needs. The Oakwood Gate drive-thru scored highest with a score of 99.16 out of 100 on our index. However, beverages were less favoured in Sheffield, with their Woodall North scoring the lowest out of the Starbucks branches, with a score of 31.21.
For Costa lovers, Chester is your best option for a brew. Their Kinsey Road drive-thru took the top spot scoring 91.38 out of 100 on the index. London once again takes last place, with Blackheath Road's Costa scoring a low 34.94 out of 100.
Krispy Kreme offers a limited amount of drive-thrus in the UK, but it is Manchester that takes the top two spots for those with a sweet tooth. Barton Dock Road is crowned first, scoring an impressive 77.80 out of 100. London takes the bottom two places, with New Malden ranking the lowest with a score of 37.32.

Overall, the reigning champion for the best-rated individual drive-thru is a McDonald's. The golden arches in Thickthorn, Norwich beat all of the remaining five chains' venues to be crowned the best drive-thru experience. This McDonald's scored the maximum in our index with 100 points thanks to its strong 4.1 star Google rating and being reviewed over 1.4k times by satisfied customers.
Warrington's Oakwood Gate Starbucks came in second with an index score of 99.16. This venue boasts a healthy 4.4 Google rating and is searched for 756 times a month alone.
Third and fourth place were taken by two more of McDonald's Norwich stronghold, both rated 4*s. McDonald's in Norwich are wildly popular, searched for over 1.7k times each month, so it's no surprise that they also scored an impressive 97.88 points, putting them in a tie.
Lincoln's Flavian Road Starbucks rounded off the top five drive-thru destinations that Brits should hit upon their travels. This Starbucks rakes in 1.3k searches a month and just missed out on placing in the top three, scoring 97.62 in the index.
The UK's worst scoring drive-thrus are all in London, and they're all the same chain
Some drive-thrus are less favoured, with London being home to the worst drive-thrus in the country. Despite its name, Burger King does not reign supreme as it accounts for the bottom five drive-thrus.
Tottenham Retail Park takes the last place position scoring a minuscule 0.39 out of 100 on the index. Its low rating of 2.7 stars contributes to it being the worst individual drive-thru in the UK. Royale Leisure Park Burger King, situated alongside the A40, isn't far behind, scoring only 0.45 out of 100.
These are the UK's best and worst cities for drive-thrus, and Norwich tops the list
We also wanted to find out which cities were superior when it comes to dining while you're dashing around. We took each of the 580 drive-thrus in the study and categorised them by city. We then took an average of their index scores to find out which UK city offers the overall best-rated experiences. Only drive-thrus with over 100 reviews were accounted for.
Unsurprisingly, Norwich topped the list, with an average index score of 89.18. Most of the drive-thrus in Norwich ranked highly with three individual venues making it into the top five drive-thrus overall.
The historic cities of Lincoln and Chester, nestled in the English countryside, followed suit in second and third with scores of 87 and 86.15, respectively. Perhaps eating with a view goes a long way to making dining in your car a more enjoyable experience.
On the other end of the spectrum, London ranked as the overall worst place to visit a drive-thru. With congested roads and concrete laden streets, it makes sense that going to a drive-thru here is more out of necessity for a quick meal rather than a jaunt out in the car. London scored a lowly average of 9.6 out of 100.

Warrington is the drive-thru capital of the UK
Some regions of the UK have a higher drive-thru density than others, giving customers more choice for their roadside dining options. But where in the country has the most drive-thrus in relation to their population?
Overall, Warrington has the highest number of drive-thrus per person out of all of the UK regions studied. With a population of over 172,000 and a density of 13 drive-thrus, that 7.6 drive-thrus for every 100,000 people. Bolton is a close second, with 7.4 for every person. Wales' Swansea rounds up the top three, with 7.3 drive-thrus per 100,000 people.
Aside from London's staggeringly low average rating for drive-thrus, it also has the lowest number of drive-thrus per person with just 0.7 for every resident. Higher volumes of people with access to fewer drive-thrus can lead to longer queues and, ultimately, more dissatisfied customers.
Which drive-thru chain scored
the highest?
As we've just seen, drivers across the UK have plenty of options to choose from, but we're sure you have your favourite. Whether that's nuggets from McDonald's golden arches or a kick of caffeine from Starbucks, drivers will often ignore more nearby options to wait for the one they really want. But which chain reigns champion?
In first place, we find Costa. The coffee shop scores an average of 65.7 out of 100 points on our index, beating off the caffeinated competition from Starbucks, who edged in at second place with 62.9 points. Costa also had one of the highest average ratings on Google reviews, with 4.21 stars. On average, 49,500 road users search for these two drive-thrus a month, making them the second most in-demand out of the chains studied.
However, it's the doughnut chain, Krispy Kreme, that scores the highest for average star ratings based on Google reviews. Famed for their original glaze, they also offer coffee and other hot drinks, and with an average rating of 4.3 stars based on 10,470 reviews, motorists clearly love a sweet treat.
At the bottom of our list, it's bad news for Burger King. They only managed an average of 35.2 points out of 100 in our index and a very average star rating of 3.5, according to Google, based on 71,270 reviews. It's unsurprising then that Burger King only garnered 6,600 searches per month by hungry motorists, especially compared to the 74,000 searches McDonald's has.
KFC settled in the middle for both index score (35.3/100) and search volume with a fair 18,100 searches per month of fans looking for finger-lickin' chicken.

Methodology
Nationwide Vehicle Contracts gathered all of the drive-thru locations for 50 UK locations, focusing on six popular fast food and coffee chains. They then analysed the number of drive-thrus per capita in each location, alongside Google Search Volumes per capita and Google Reviews for each restaurant. These factors were then ranked to give a total score out of 100, creating the 'drive-thru index' to determine which chain and which locations had the best and worst rated drive-thrus in the UK. Any restaurants with lower than 100 reviews were omitted from the results.
