What is covered by the van breakdown policy?

DriverFirst Assist provides the following services:

  • Roadside Assistance - Provides roadside support if your van breaks down away from home. If the fault cannot be repaired at the roadside, recovery is available to the nearest garage, your home address or your original destination.
  • Home Assist - Provides assistance if your van develops a fault or fails to start at your home address.
  • Caravans and Trailers - Includes recovery for caravan/trailers fitted with a standard towing hitch, subject to size and eligibility criteria.
  • Accident Cover - Provides transportation of your van to a nominated local address if it becomes immobile or illegal to drive following an accident.
  • Puncture Cover - Includes assistance following a puncture, provided your van is equipped with a serviceable spare wheel or approved tyre inflation kit.
  • Battery-range anxiety (full electric vehicles only) - Provides transportation for your van and passengers to the nearest charging point, home address or intended destination if the vehicle runs out of charge. Limited to two call-outs per year.
  • Lack of fuel (non-electric vehicles) - Provides transportation for your van and passengers to the nearest fuel station, home address or intended destination if the vehicle runs out of fuel. Limited to two call-outs per year.

What is excluded on van breakdown policy?

DriverFirst Assist excludes the following services:

  • The cost of replacement parts, components or materials required to repair the van
  • Any charges or expenses incurred without prior approval from the Rescue Controller
  • Any service or insurance cover relating to a recurring fault where recommended repairs or actions following a previous breakdown have not been completed
  • Breakdowns resulting from overloading the van or carrying more passengers than the manufacturer's specified limits
  • Expenses relating to alternative travel arrangements, overnight stays or vehicle hire
  • Any caravan or trailer that exceeds the maximum size limit of 23 feet in length or that is without a standard towing hitch, as set out within the policy terms

Frequently asked questions regarding breakdown cover

If you lease a van through Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, your DriverFirst Assist breakdown cover is provided by Car Care Plan, a trusted provider of vehicle warranty and asset protection products, and underwritten by Motors Insurance Company Limited, which is registered in the UK.

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts offer six months of free cover on all used vans leased through us.

To make a claim, you'll need to call DriverFirst Assist at 0344 573 9176.

You will need to tell the controller that you're a DriverFirst customer, your policy number, vehicle registration number, where your vehicle is and what seems to be the problem.

The coverage has a limit of six call-outs per year and the maximum amount you can claim in a year is £2,500.

It also doesn't cover vehicles that are:

  • In excess of 3.5 tonnes; more than 17 feet long, 6 feet 3 inches wide and 8 feet high
  • Used for motor racing, rallies, public hire, private hire or any contest or speed trials

You are covered throughout the United Kingdom, which includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The driver must keep the car in a roadworthy condition, including maintenance or proper oil and water levels.

Also, if the van breaks down, the driver must remain with or nearby the vehicle until help arrives.

If you want to cancel your cover, you can call Car Care Plan on 0344 573 8000.

You can cancel your coverage free of charge within 30 days of buying it, and you will be eligible for a full refund.

If you cancel your policy after these 30 days, you'll have to pay a cancellation fee of £20 but will still be eligible for a refund.
