The California sleeps four across all trims, though the setup differs depending on which version you choose. Coast and Ocean models have a dedicated fold-out lower bed measuring 1,980mm x 1,060mm.
On the Beach Camper, the two outer rear seatbacks fold flat to create the lower sleeping area. All models share the same pop-up roof bed upstairs, which sleeps two more.
There are three to choose from. The 2.0-litre TDI diesel (148bhp) is the most efficient and well-suited to longer trips, returning up to 41.5mpg on the WLTP cycle. The 2.0-litre TSI petrol (201bhp) offers a bit more performance if that's a priority.
Then there's the 1.5-litre eHybrid 4MOTION (242bhp), which adds all-wheel drive and up to 53 miles of electric-only range.
There's no toilet, for that you'd need to look at the larger Grand California. A rear cold-water shower connection comes as standard on Coast and Ocean models, which is handy for rinsing off wetsuits, muddy boots or sandy feet after a day out.
