Toyota C-HR Review 2022

The Toyota C-HR is a compact, stylish SUV that's easy to drive and cheap to run. Its unique dimensions make it stand out as a family car from less eye-catching SUVs.

Rivals to the Toyota C-HR include the SEAT Ateca, Nissan Qashqai, Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Juke.

Our Toyota C-HR review covers:

Toyota C-HR Key Features

  • Sharp, sporty design with a swooping coupe-like roofline and angular headlights
  • Futuristic interior with eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard
  • 377-litre boot, which expands to 1,164 litres with the rear seats folded
  • Choice of two hybrid technology engines
  • Four trim levels, including Icon, Design, Excel and GR Sport

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The Toyota C-HR has an eye-catching design with its swooping coupe-like roofline and angular headlights, making it look much sportier than its conventional boxy SUV rivals. The C-HR also has new front and rear bumpers and scrolling LED indicators to add to its striking design.

Toyota C-HR

Inside the C-HR, there isn't as much room as the Volkswagen Tiguan, and its swooping coupe-like roofline feels pretty dark and cramped in the back.

As for boot space, the C-HR offers up to 377 litres of capacity, increasing to 1,164 litres with the rear seats folded down. There’s enough space for a weekly shop, but compared with similar-sized, similarly-priced rivals, such as the Seat Ateca and Nissan Qashqai, it can carry more luggage.

Interior and Trims

The Toyota C-HR's futuristic interior looks just as slick as its angular exterior. But, unfortunately, it's let down by some cheap plastics and cramped rear seats.

All models have an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard, with several fixed buttons flanking the central display to help you easily access key features.

Four trim levels are available, including Icon, Design, Excel and GR Sport.

The entry-level Icon trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers and LED daytime running lights. Plus, DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone air conditioning and a reversing camera.

The Design model comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows and auto-folding side mirrors. This trim also adds heated front seats, adjustable lumbar support for the driver's seat, ambient lighting and keyless entry. Plus, an infotainment system with sat-nav and access to online features such as the weather or nearby fuel prices.

The Excel model adds a few luxurious touches with a full leather trim, front and rear parking sensors and smart silver and dark brown interior.

The top-of-the-range GR Sport is a sporty-looking warm-hatch model with 19-inch alloy wheels, tinted adaptive LED headlights, LED tail lights and active indicators. It also adds a leather-wrapped GR Sport steering wheel and electrically adjustable sports seats covered in leather and Alcantara. Plus, a JBL Premium audio system completes the package.

Power and Performance

Toyota offers the C-HR with two self-charging hybrid engines, including a 120bhp 1.8-litre petrol found in the Toyota Prius. There’s also a 181bhp 2.0-litre petrol that it shares with the Toyota Corolla

Toyota C-HR

The Toyota C-HR's efficient self-charging hybrid technology switches effortlessly between electric energy or a combination of petrol and electric power.

The Toyota C-HR was created with urban living in mind making it perfect for commuting around town. You can manoeuvre easily and maintain control in confined places thanks to Its sharp, responsive acceleration, agile handling and agility.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new Toyota C-HR start from £28,979.00 OTR* or to lease from £304.02 per month.

I have tried to amend my contract due to now working from home- my contract says 30,000 miles and I’ll be lucky if I do 10,000 for the next 2 years. I have also lost a lot of income . When I tried to reduce my lease I was sent a form which seems to need me to say I am in real hardship - I’m not but have lost 10% of my income and no longer need a lease car for 90,000 miles I’ve r3 years. Would love to reduce my lease but am not willing to lie

There are plenty of options but the sync system is slow and it doens't always pair with the phone correctly. Fuel economy is brilliant as is the ride but the space in the rear isn't as good as I would hope. Boot Space is ok but I think I would expect more for a car of this size. Most disappointing is I've not been able to get it serviced yet as the prepaid servicing is not working, this maybe due to COVID but it is highly irratating. The car ride is very comfortable and it does handle well but the rear facing camera isnt set right, I dont feel as it will show you being away from a potential hazard but I check of the mirror will show you are about to hit it.

This is the third lease policy with Nationwide and this car is fantastic. It expires in September and have just taken a new contract on exactly the same make and model. Would highly recommend.

Love the styling - first thing that attracted me to the car. Has proved to have a great combination of comfort and practicality. Performance is not the greatest, but I knew this model was slightly underpowered when I chose it (1.2 Turbo model); economy has been good. Only thing that annoys me about the car is the auto-headlight system - it's oversensitive and lights often come on when not required and system doesn't have a way to manually turn the lights fully off.

This is the third Contract Hire agreement with Nationwide and have always had prior to the CHR an Auris. This car is fantastic. Style wise, is has something that none of the other SUV's in its class has and performs like a dream Would highly recommend this make and model to other customers. My two colleagues have taken company car's out with yourselves since and both opted for the same make and model.

This is the first time I've leased a vehicle and can honestly say I would likely do it again, the car is great, looks good, does 520 miles on a tank of petrol costing £45, has all the gadgets I wanted. Had my first service this week and I'dd added the service package, phoned up NVC and service was booked in no problems.
