BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Review 2022

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door coupe with a premium interior and a great infotainment system. The 2 Series Gran Coupe offers a distinctive, sporty style and four-door practicality.

Rivals to the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe include the Mercedes CLA, Volkswagen Arteon and Audi A3 Saloon.

Our BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe review covers:

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Key Features

  • Striking exterior design with distinctive BMW kidney grille and frameless doors
  • Exclusive and dynamic interior with a driver-oriented cockpit
  • 430-litre boot space
  • Choice of petrol and diesel engines
  • Two trim levels, including Sport and M Sport

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Excellent handling
  • Well built
  • High-class interior

Cons:

  • Firm ride
  • Rear-seat feels cramped
  • Expensive compared to rivals

Design, Practicality and Boot Space

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door version of the 2 Series Coupe and is essentially a BMW 1 Series with a swooping roof at the back. The 2 Series Gran Coupe has a striking exterior design with a distinctive kidney grille, LED headlights/rear lights and frameless doors.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe exterior

BMW added the four-door Gran Coupe to the 2 Series car range to increase the model's practicality for rear-seat passengers. Compared to the BMW 1 Series, the back has less headroom, as the roofline cuts into the available space. However, in the front, there are plenty of adjustments to get comfortable and create space.

As for boot space, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe offers 430 litres of boot space which is 30 litres smaller than its Mercedes CLA rival. This is bigger than the 1 Series and gives you some handy underfloor storage spaces, but it can be a hassle-loading item due to the low and flat boot lip.

Interior and Trims

The inside of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is excellent, including an illuminated interior trim, sports seats, and a driver-oriented cockpit that projects a dynamic and exciting atmosphere.

Everything in the BMW feels solid and well-built, with plenty of soft-touch plastics and solid-feeling metal-effect trims used on the dashboard, doors and centre console. All the buttons are easy to reach, and the stalks behind the steering wheel feel solid and high-class.

However, while the interior is an improvement over the old 2 Series Gran Coupe, the interior could be more impressive like its rivals, such as the Mercedes CLA's futuristic cabin.

All BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe comes with BMW's Live Cockpit Plus system, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in satellite navigation. The system's easy to use and is operated using the rotary dial on the centre console or touchscreen.

Two trim levels are available, including Sport and M Sport.

The entry-level Sport models come with 17-inch wheels, an 8.8-inch infotainment display with satnav and access to BMW's suite of online services, aircon, cruise control, parking sensors and an extensive selection of driver assistance systems.

The M Sport trim adds sportier styling, 18-inch wheels, a larger 10.25-inch infotainment system with satnav and further online services, heated Dakota leather seats, a sports steering wheel and folding door mirrors to the Sport model's spec.

Power and Performance

BMW offers the 2 Series Gran Coupe with the choice of petrol and diesel engines.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe interior

You can choose between a three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol 218i with 140hp, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder 220d diesel or the top-of-the-range M235i with a 306hp 2.0 petrol. The 1.5-litre comes with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed auto, but the 220d and M235i only have an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 1.5-litre petrol is the best all-round option, but the diesels are suitable for driving longer trips.

Whichever version you choose, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is great to drive and an excellent leasing option. It's comfortable over potholes and easy enough to drive despite having rather limited visibility. The 2 Series Gran Coupe has a lot of grip and excellent steering, making driving on a winding route enjoyable, and it's smooth to drive long distances on the motorway.

Leasing vs Buying

Prices for the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe start from £29,565.00 OTR* or to lease from £315.20 per month.

I drove one of these on a long trip to Newcastle (from near Aberdeen) was a series 4 and loved it. Went with the BMW GC2 for budget and has been adopted as part of my family. We’re used to a family 7 seater and now adapted with older kids. Love it all… tech to looks!

Two main dislikes for me - firstly the lane assist steering intervention is annoying and dangerous - it has to be manually turned off every time I start the engine as it defaults to 'on' as soon as the engine is turned off (which according to the internet is the standard BMW setting, contrary to what the driver's manual says) - in the first month I had the car, I nearly hit 2 cyclists, a line of parked cars and a large pothole as the car tried to steer me into them after I steered to go round them, and it tried to keep me on the wrong side of the road after overtaking a bus - ridiculously dangerous! Second dislike is that there is no ability to connect any device to the car to play music other than a phone and my phone isn't compatible! - so I have to put up with the radio only.

Car is very bad on fuel. Also the car does not have a good amount of space in the back for car seat. Boot space is also a problem.

Very annoying safety measures ~ lane departure system that has to be turned off every journey, occasionally shouts brake at you for no good reason, ergonomics poor lots of info hidden behind steering wheel, poor heater and aircon disappointing for the money. Nice colour Snapper Rocks blue!

Love the way it drives. I usually hate driving but I look forward to getting in the drivers seat of the BMW M235i. Lots of tech make you really think about the way you drive, eco pro mode makes this a very fuel Effie to car, but set to Sport mode for fun!
