The Audi A5 Sportback is a sporty five-door compact executive car that space and pioneering technologies fit for the whole family. The new Audi A5 Sportback should definitely be on your list for your next lease vehicle, featuring a fresh look, new technology, and a revised engine line-up.
Rivals to the Audi A5 Sportback include the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, Volkswagen Arteon, Jaguar XE, Kia Stinger, and Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Our Audi A5 Sportback review covers:
The A5 Sportback is essentially a sporty five-door version of the Audi A5 Coupe, adding practicality to the stylish model range. It stands out from the crowd with its striking design, wide air inlets, and classy chrome trim, which emphasise the Audi A5 Sportback's sporty edge.
Inside the Audi A5 Sportback, you get a high-quality interior and plenty of room to get comfy, regardless of how tall or short you are. There is plenty of knee and headroom, but if you stick three adults back, it starts to feel a little tight and crushed.
As for boot space, the A5 Sportback offers 465 litres boot, which expands to 1,280 litres with the rear seats folded. Unlike the Audi A5 Coupe, the A5 Sportback's boot opens from the roof, improving versatility. It's certainly a match, but the Audi’s boot is smaller than the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe’s 470 litres load bay.
The Audi A5 Sportback interior is excellent, with well-built quality, plenty of technology and a logically laid-out cabin. It is beautifully built and covered in soft-touch materials from top to bottom, with all dials and buttons laid out clearly and easy to read. The A5 Sportback's high-quality interior is similar to that of the Mercedes C-Class Saloon interior for solidity and elegance.
You instantly feel like you're driving a car from the future with Audi's 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit system as standard. The fully digital setup can display full-screen sat-nav mapping, media data or trip information alongside the speedometer and rev counter. Overall the A5 Sportback interior is intuitive to use and looks great.
Three trim levels are available, including Sport, S Line and Black Edition.
Sport models come with unique 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather interior, matt-aluminium trim pieces, electrically adjustable front seats, four-way lumbar adjustment to reduce backache, and an LED interior lighting pack. It also has a seven-inch infotainment screen with integrated sat-nav, three-zone climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
S line models come with sporty S line touches such as illuminated door openings, stainless steel pedals, sports seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED front and rear lights and Sports suspension.
Black Edition models add black exterior details such as mirrors, body kit parts, and grille. They come with 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels, full LED headlights with scrolling indicators and a lowered sports suspension. Inside, you get dark leather/alcantara upholstery and Audi's 7.0-inch infotainment system with sat nav.
Audi offers the A5 Sportback in a range of petrol and diesel engines.
The range starts with the 1.4 TFSI 150PS petrol, followed by a 2.0 TFSI in 204PS and 265PS forms with 201bhp or 261bhp. The Audi's standard six-speed manual transmission is smooth, but the optional seven-speed automatic gearbox makes commuting less stressful. If you frequently travel on wet, slippery roads, the optional quattro four-wheel-drive system is also worth considering.
If you'd prefer diesel, the range includes two 2.0-litre models badged 35 TDI and 40 TDI with 161 and 201bhp.
If you regularly drive on the motorways, the 40 TDI 150hp 2.0-litre diesel engine is a good option that's brisk but also very economical on fuel. If you do shorter journeys around town and fancy something more sporty, the 45 TFSI 204hp 2.0-litre petrol may be a better option.
The Audi A5 Sportback is great to drive around town with its light controls, making it easy to drive and comfortable, thanks to its suspension. Longer journeys are also relaxing as it's even quiet on the motorways.
The current Audi A5 Sportback is better to drive than its predecessor, but the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is still more engaging to drive. However, if you want a car that feels premium, looks stylish, is decent to drive and has space for the family, the Audi A5 Sportback is a perfect option.
Prices for the new Audi A5 Sportback start from £39,600.00 OTR* or to lease from £365.03 per month.
